"No wonder moral philosophies of AI lean heavily on the buzzword 'alignment.' When two minds’ perceptions of a third thing line up, we might call that congruity the cognitive equivalent of love." @page88 takes a fresh look at the AI revolution. #longreads

First it was chess and Go. Now AI can beat us at Diplomacy, the most human of board games. The way it wins offers hope that maybe AI will be a delight.

When an overpass collapsed, politicians and experts predicted calamity for months. After less than a week, things returned “close to normal.”

I wrote about a magical place in New Jersey filled with carnivorous plants. I tend to think that large intact ecosystems don’t exist in the Mid-Atlantic, let alone in the most crowded state. Yet the Pine Barrens are just that. Photos by me & sr. getty. https://t.co/H43HzVDd5D

BREAKING: The truck being used to promote a big-biz-backed effort to keep McGuinness Blvd. dangerous for all road users has out-of-state plates AND a record of 13 speeding tickets, 2 red light tickets and 47 parking tix since 2016. What a great neighbor! https://t.co/JArQkh84Mq

Given the amount of interest a tweet showing a photo of an empty cycle lane got, I thought it's a good time to bust out this one again. Cycle lanes and footpath don't appear congested as they (mostly) allow people to move through quickly and efficiently.

Obscene. Gross. We are the worst.
2. There are about 3.5 million people who work for the federal gov't. 72% of all federal workers are "defense-related," That includes DoD civilians, uniformed military, and Veterans Affairs staff. https://t.co/aCRNiaA26N

🤷🏼♂️ “previous work established the social & health benefits of car-free urban spaces, but with a biometric lens; by measuring unconscious reactions to different scenes, we now have empirical evidence of the harm caused just by seeing cars.” #carsruincities

Unbelievable. I'm incredibly disappointed that the State Assembly (@NYSA_Majority) is refusing to bring #SammysLaw up for a vote after the @NYCCouncil *and* @NYCMayor showed our support for the law through a super majority. Families across the city deserve this vote.
Wow. HUGE NEWS! We’re passing Sammy’s Law in the @NYCCouncil, clearing the way for Albany to *allow* NYC to lower our speed limits and save lives. This is for my baby, this is for all of our kids, this is for Sammy Cohen-Eckstein and all who we’ve lost to traffic violence.

Makes sense since water can’t travel underground. Duh. “The court held that law covers only wetlands “with a continuous surface connection” to those waters, Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. wrote for five justices.”
nytimes.com
Experts said the decision would sharply undercut the agency’s authority to protect millions of acres of wetlands under the Clean Water Act, leaving them subject to pollution without penalty.

The most unsurprising finding in the history of social science.
“That’s the great irony of firearms training,” the sociologist Harel Shapira writes. “In learning how to use a gun for self-defense, something that seems like it might give you confidence and a sense of safety, people end up feeling more afraid.”

Florida criminalizes college history classes.
Breaking news: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed a bill into law Monday that would bar the state’s colleges and universities from spending money on diversity, equity and inclusion programs, and limit how race can be discussed in many courses. https://t.co/2rYz0r6leG
