Feels absolutely wild to have broken this record 🤯 My work stands on the shoulders of so many Black British literary giants - Bernadine Evaristo, Benjamin Zephaniah, Zadie Smith, Andrea Levy, Stella Dadzie, Stuart Hall, Linton K Johnson, Jackie Kay, Gary Younge - to name a few.
I feel like the cast of RuPaul's Drag Race UK is doing more for Britain's reputation on the world stage than the British government at this moment in time
This month, I join 19 other activists, many of whom I deeply admire, on a special pull out cover of

Wow. It's been over three years since publication, yet this is the first review of WHY I'M that properly understands what I was trying to do in the writing of it.

I don't think any of us would have got through lockdown without the arts. TV and film is the arts. Gaming is the arts. The books you read to escape are the arts. The music you listened to in order to cope is the arts. The government ignores the arts at its peril.
Failure to properly support the arts is an ideological choice and not an economic one. The maths do not add up, when compared to other industries. I get that others in my field can’t say this, but I can and I will.
I've been plotting alongside Rebecca Solnit,
@emmawatson
and
@WOWisGlobal
launch a public history project - reimagining

I've written to both
@spectator

@Independent
, asking them to correct the false claims about my politics published in both publications last weekend.
I have watched Francia Márquez Mina's rise - the first black Vice President of Colombia - with respect and admiration. Breaking those kind of barriers comes with relentless racism. I hope she finds some respite in my work. In solidarity,

It happened. 52 weeks. Which by our intensive mathematical reasoning (thought we were one trick ponies, eh?) adds up to an *entire year*. Congrats,

At this point, news stations need to make an ethical call on broadcasting lies and conspiracy theories without simultaneous caption/commentary pointing out as such. No matter how high the office.
😭😭😭 Peter is an objectionable character BUT EastEnders has been a part of my life since childhood and basically got me through the pandemic, so this is a career highlight 😭😭😭
After weeks of illness, two rounds of antibiotics and two negative covid tests, I'm finally getting over a particularly virulent chest infection and feeling like myself again. The best Christmas gift I could have hoped for.🎄🙏🏾
The moment where Harry tells Oprah that his family are scared of the tabloids and know that they *have* to play the game is the one that has most stoked that media rage. You’re not supposed to say out loud how the trick is done.
@HackneyAbbott
@UKLabour
I can't think of any context in which those comments would be acceptable. You're right to push for full publication of the chats. Sunlight might work as a disinfectant.
Last night, the BeReal notification pinged as I was mid speech, celebrating selling a million copies of my book, surrounded by the best people. My favourite post yet 💜
@AyoCaesar
You're very right to point out the media framing of this incident, Ash. The fact that multiple media outlets framed her as the victim and you as the aggressor suggests that there is more sympathy for her views in journalism than the industry would like to admit.
fuck it, im writing the book i want to read. i don’t care about publishing or trends, nothing. This book will blow MY own socks off. that’s it. that’s the tweet.
Loved being in conversation with the legendary Angela Davis. At a time when we are quick to revere the 'lone genius', she does a wonderful job of bringing her work back to the movement, and is always thinking of the collective.
Wonderful to welcome two literary trailblazers to City Hall tonight to talk race, identity and the Black British experience.
Thanks to

and
@renireni
for such a lively, engaging discussion and debate.

I hope everyone can see this for what it is. This statement, Piers Morgan's (a former tabloid editor) swivel eyed rage. Harry exposed a long standing symbiotic relationship, and toys are being thrown out of the pram.

it may be surprising to you to learn that i was in an emotionally and physically abusive relationship. it was hard for me to process too, during and after i never thought something like this would happen to me.
Here's my theory: thirteen years of the Tories severely underfunding public services has some working people feeling resentful about paying tax. That resentment plays neatly into the hands of the low tax right wing of the Tory party. Please understand.... we are being played
Since 2021, the Conservative Party's line on racism in Britain is that it doesn't exist. To acknowledge the truth of their biggest donor's hateful comments, the explicit reference to Diane's race & gender, would be to concede defeat. That's why
@10DowningStreet
floundered today.
That my alma mater chose to suspend the students who exposed racism is an absolute disgrace. Don't dare claim me as a success while engaging in this nonsense. Reinstate the students immediately!!
Amazing to see this politician respond to the aquittal of the Colston 4 by essentially saying that the result of a *trial by jury* undermines the rule of law, and that his party is planning to change the rules to make sure it goes their way next time.

Bloomsbury is releasing an updated edition of Reni Eddo-Lodge’s Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race, which the publisher says has now sold more than one million copies across all editions.
It isn't right that a single company holds the only key to what millions of people around the world consider to be vital infrastructure. If you in anyway make your living online, I hope yesterday served as a grave warning.
To the huge community of people and businesses around the world who depend on us: we're sorry. We’ve been working hard to restore access to our apps and services and are happy to report they are coming back online now. Thank you for bearing with us.
The UK's media landscape felt hostile towards young people of colour before Gal-dem came along. The magazine was so necessary, such a balm to many of our souls, so assertive in centering marginalised voices. We cannot take quality independent media for granted.
We are incredibly sad to announce that gal-dem is closing.
Several factors that have contributed to this difficult decision, including numerous challenges with running a small, mission-driven, independent media company. We’ve shared more here
I'm delighted to reveal City of Women London! I've collaborated with

Her character was done absolutely dirty in the way she was written out of Angel - seemed like textbook discrimination against a pregnant actress - so this is not surprising to me at all
Charisma Carpenter opening up about the emotional abuse she endured while working with joss whedon on both Buffy and Angel. proud of her for being courageous enough to post this. This man cannot keep getting away with treating people like this.

Boris consistently takes leaves out of Trump's book. Ego over honour. Deny responsibly (lockdown raving), deflect (culture wars), twist the truth, never apologise. We can't be surprised that he's now hanging on for dear life! And now, like Trump, he'll be ousted in disgrace.
I'd like to thank the Black Writers Guild for this letter of support. I hate to think of the chilling effect this kind of government misrepresentation has on the freedom of speech of up and coming writers looking to challenge the status quo.
It's an honour to have been recognised with a fellowship from the Royal Society of Literature. Thank you

We are so pleased to announce our new Fellows, Honorary Fellows & Benson Medallist for 2021. We'll be spotlighting all 45 of our announcements via specially-commissioned animated films over the next few hours. Huge thanks to Old Possum’s Practical Trust for supporting this work.
This map reveals just how suffocatingly small the UK's ~writing for money~ scene is. Understandable anger from those implicated in the nepotism, but sooner or later, the conversation about inequality has to get personal. These organisations are made out of people, after all!
"Survivorhood means acknowledging one’s own experience and escape from a traumatic relationship. It does not mean you are by definition incapable of causing harm." - thoughtful writing here, critiquing rigid binaries in feminist thinking and organising.
I’m really proud of this piece

Vilifying trans survivors is a refusal to fight for the lives of those who are least resourced to flee violence.
A good chunk of his minions who've quit over the past few months (ministers and otherwise) have spent many years basking in his political patronage. Don't fuckin trust them when they try to reinvent themselves!!!
That's not to say that the space doesn't need more writers with new + interesting things to add to the conversation. It does! But if I'm feeling tired by the industry's failure to be innovative and exciting when introducing these new writers, then I can't imagine how readers feel

I experienced a particular alchemy with the team I worked with on WHY I'M back in 2015, from editorial to cover design to publicity. It was a challenge for all of us, no blueprint to follow. I don't think that can be recreated.
@emmagannon
I took a break, came back and wondered if I was being maligned for my absence... It's now a struggle to see posts from real life friends, colleagues and acquaintances, and it's tough to for my posts to be seen by people who follow my work. A mess all round.
Craven, cynical and opportunistic capitalising on feminist campaigning against social media abuse -- from an MP who's spent a fair bit of her time in parliament trying to restrict abortion access. The politics of representation is killing us!!!
