Of the many complexities of the Karabakh conflict, the blurring of NKAO with the 7 regions into a single imagined space in Armenian discourse doesn’t get enough attention. But this had moral and strategic implications, and should be explored, even at a moment of loss and trauma.
I have reported on Armenia for a number of years and interviewed top advisors of all its leaders. They were deluded by romantic nationalism. And thought Russia and the West were on their side. But when Azerbaijan attacked, nobody came to their rescue.

This piece about Russian hybrid warfare by the remarkable Ben Taub is a must read. It’s set in the Arctic. But the observations and lessons apply across Europe, and in the Baltics and in the South Caucasus, among other places.
Incredible reporting and storytelling by Ben Taub. "Most of the time, you can’t see what’s around you, even if you know that it’s there."

This last episode gets to a place that you would be hard pressed to anticipate… or to forget. You’ll probably stop whatever else you’re doing when you get to it. A pitch-perfect ending to a podcast that kept delivering.
The final episode of Shell Game season 1 is out today. Hard to make, hard for me to listen to at times, but we hope it's a funny, eerie, delightful, and perhaps haunting conclusion to our journey with an AI clone of me, how it felt to encounter it, and what we can learn from it.
