🍿This week, I start a new job as food reporter at the
@chicagotribune
! 🥭
It's true: after five years of freelancing in audio and food journalism, I've finally returned to full-time...and now I'm in print!
The only thing I won't be writing food-wise is reviews.
Send me tips!
Was very revealing to me in my teens that Keira Knightly had a whole A-list movie career after co-starring in Bend it Like Beckham while the unbelievably charismatic lead Parminder Nagra never really had the same chance to lead a blockbuster.
Currently wondering why Lana Condor hasn’t received any major work in Hollywood yet after carrying the
#ToAllTheBoys
trilogy on her back with her charm and charisma, while Noah Centineo has been tied to BLACK ADAM, HE-MAN, the “GameStop” movie, etc etc etc 🤔
The whole internet loves Bon Appetit, a cute test kitchen that makes food! *3 years later* We regret to inform you the test kitchen is racist. *1 year* The whole internet loves Test Kitchen, the exposè exploring racism at BA! *2 days* We regret to inform you the exposè is racist
bts twitter is becoming monoculture and i feel myself being fed into its maw. in like two months my cover photo will be of jimin and i will be embroiled in at least three wars on stan twitter
Indian diaspora needs to be speaking out against Modi. It’s shocking how much unchecked Hindu Nationalism there is, without critical comparison to white supremacy. People speak favorably of the Kashmir move as if it’s not a potential prelude to ethnic cleansing and settlements.
hello white people these two items are not pronounced the same way. i am sorry we spelled it "lassi" instead of "lussi" but please, you have to stop, i am begging you.
i fucking love being from the midwest. i can tell the most basic anecdote from my childhood, like how i grew up eating chocolate chip bagels with chocolate chip cream cheese, and three new yorkers will die immediately
In my reporting, free meals for those who can’t afford it is a relatively common, understated policy of Pakistani restaurants in NYC/NJ. At one spot, my cousin forgot to pay. He came back, asked why they didn’t charge. The gent said he didn’t want to assume he could afford.
I watched Never Have I Ever and enjoyed it. But i was pretty troubled that they wrote in anti-Muslim bias (and Modi support!) into the mom's character for an episode and had no Muslim character's speak back? The Hindu woman even said she regretted marrying a Muslim! Pretty tense.
I pray weekly at ICNYU and for nearly two years, since the Muslim ban, about a half dozen folks from a Jewish community have stood outside our jumah prayers at NYU in solidarity.
I knew today they’d be there in a huge show of support because they’ve been there every. damn. week.
A stunning portrayal of solidarity where many have gathered outside the Islamic Center of NYU wishing worshipers words of support and love. Many Muslims are walking in with tears, overwhelmed by the kindness.
WW84 is that type of white feminist movie where a white man from Jim Crow-era segregation is the best man humanity has ever known but the Arab men are fanatic bigots desiring a border wall and Latino men are wife beaters & megalomonics. I’m stunned at how racist it was.
Muslims, 2016: can you close Guantanamo like you promised
Obama: Hey! So glad you reached out. I’m actually at capacity/helping someone who’s in crisis/dealing with sum personal stuff right now & I dont think I can hold appropriate space for you. Could we connect [later date]?
Real talk: thank you to Eric & Brittany for speaking out. Thank you to all the nonwhite folks at BA who have had to air the trauma of working in media over & over again. This shit is extremely hard and I believe building collective power across race, gender, and ALSO class is key
From TV, you’d think desi families are all judgmental and unemotional when a lot of them are like this family who cheer on their gentle sweet abu for growing the newest member of their family, a baby cantaloupe
@GeeDee215
i had this roommate who would binge eat all my nutella and bread. and then get really apologetic and buy me another nutella and loaf of bread. and then binge that again. and then apologize. i would hide it in my room but he'd sneak in and ate it again. and then apologize, again.
Twitter Blue is really a great deal tbh. For $8, you can make an insulin company lose $20 billion dollars market cap in a day. Pretty much the most valuable subscription in the history of the internet.
My first time at Quesabirria Jalisco, I asked Ventura Orozco why his tacos were halal.
He answered with a moving story bout how a Palestinian restaurant took him in when he was at his lowest & how making his own shop halal led him to success.
Read here:
Yes she was on ER, but remember George Clooney was also on ER. His material and cultural success was completely transformed by starring in Films. He, like Nagra, was older at the time. There is a sexism & racism baked in the replies here that suggest TV was enough opportunity
I like Allison Roman and Ottolenghi & rely on them, but this comment kind of reveals my suspicion with the fanbase around them—if you disconnect techniques from their cultural background, the usage of spices seem precious for no reason. Also, lol at nostalgic for "salt & pepper"
I was paid $600 for a 800 word essay by Bon Appetit. So I'm livid that Hawa Hassan's ambitious food video content was only paid $400 for each of her 3 videos.
Media institutions need us more than we need them. It's shameful how they take advantage, specifically of black folks.
Rihanna’s mom has an Instagram and it’s just WhatsApp Bible verses and pictures of her babies. Peak immigrant auntie. Her commitment to her aesthetic is unmatched.
so! lassi 101!
lassi is rhymes with ‘fussy,’ not with celebrity dog name (credit
@nycplayer
). the ‘s’ comes at end of the first syllable as well as the beginning of second. take a listen, class!
with your help, we can kill lassie in a generation. proud of all my eager students
If you're a food blogger, here's some advice:
Write your entire life-story before the recipe. I want multiple subheadings. 100% pure stream-of-consciousness. An hour read so I can build up an appetite. I must know every family member. I want to feel rage, joy, & confusion.
Last week I got an email from Sruthi about Reply All’s Test Kitchen series. I had been avoiding listening but once I did I felt gaslit. The truth is RA and specifically PJ and Sruthi contributed to a near identical toxic dynamic at Gimlet. This will be a longer thread, apologies.
My desi novel: ‘The chai was /garam/ like the Balochi desert, the mangoes plump, dancing bhangra seductively on my plate. As we dug in, Baba scolded me conservatively, unlike the white parents in our suburb. I was sad, oppressed. When would I be free? I prayed to my god, Allah.’
writing my Latino novel: "We fled late in the night, or /la noche/ as Mami calls it. I'm always embarrassed when Mami says shit like that, but I forgive her because she's one of eleven kids and is from /el barrio./ Anyway it was late at night, and Yolanda Saldivar was chasing us-
diaspora twitter: when i was growing up, the kids at school mocked how my lunch smelled. now they post photos of their indian food on instagram. hands off my food, colonizer! you could never make it like us.
the homeland: what if we put mangoes on pizza and nutella in samosas
Lost my ID a week ago in a place it should not have been lost. Received it in the mail today with a very cute letter. There are good people in the world.
Pakistani mangos were approved for import in 2011. But still, anytime I post a haul, I get messages: “how the hell did you get those?”
The answer involves irradiation, WhatsApp, and plenty of risk For

around the time I was laid off from BuzzFeed's audio department — the two of them have absolutely been doing the work over the years not only to diversify and share power, but also to give guidance in a fucked-up industry.
The Black Panther film's messages around imperialism are pretty muddled at times, but I did think it was funny that people on Twitter said it portrayed the CIA as heroes when the film basically said the USA would be the worst country in the world to get access to Vibranium.
ramadan mubarak my friends. im already loopy at sehri and it’s only day one . game of thrones is now fan fiction. share your power. make duah. chicken is the worst (halal) meat. ameen.
I gasped when I read about that stabbing at the rabbi’s house. This trend of attacking Jews & Muslims on holy days is absolutely vile. Antisemitism, antimuslim bias, anti blackness all go together and we have to stand consistently together for justice and against white supremacy
I’m begging you to stop hyping up Muji. They’ve brazenly advertised for years that they use cotton from Xinjiang; human rights activists have claimed Uyghur Muslims produce it in forced labor camps and Xinjiang is the global center of China’s ongoing genocide.
As H&M and other global clothing brands walk a fine line on Xinjiang, Japanese chain Muji is taking a different approach altogether—it says it uses Xinjiang cotton and doesn’t see a problem with advertising that fact.
@megumifujikawa
My favorite East Coast-ism is when I’m like ‘the best pizza we had in my hometown was Dominoes’ and they all are compelled by the spirit of LaGuardia to say ‘DOMINOS ISNT PIZZA.’ tf was i eating then
@ImaniAmrani
@ridak96
I think its a lovely photo, but I am disturbed by the # of anonymous photos of muslims used to endorse a liberal view of american acceptance
