If you want a capital markets union in Europe, start by coordinating capital gains taxes, and stopping double taxation of gains made in EU countries other than your tax residence (which won't happen if you invest in the US instead).
Can someone please explain the logic behind capital gains tax? It’s a tax on income generated from already-taxed savings, and it makes no distinction between real gains and those that merely offset inflation. Does it make any sense to you?

Maduro would be given a safe and comfortable retreat, similarly to Assad in Russia. A much better fate than Saddam, Gaddafi, Milosevic, etc He would save face politically (claiming he was captured against his will), and save his own life.

Maybe Maduro wasn't captured, but rescued. Sure, he was an inept and corrupt dictator, but how much effective control did he have over the country, and how much did the drug lords have over him? Had he signed a deal with the US, these people would have assassinated him.

Do all the Americans ridiculing the EU about making USB-C a standard really believe that proprietary formats foster innovation? Or are they just jealous because the US has not been capable of making Apple move away from lightning?
One port, one cable, one Europe. This holiday, unwrap the power of one: USB-C for all. Yes, not just phones, tablets, and laptops. In three years, every charger will be under the same tree. Because less waste, smarter choices, mean more for everyone, all year long.

GDP used to matter when it was closely correlated with industrial output. In a hyperfinancialized service economy like the US, it is increasingly irrelevant as a measure of civilizational progress, wellbeing of the population, ability to wage war against a peer adversary, etc
@MorlockP @MartinSkold2 GDP no longer represents a reasonable estimate of industrial capacity to wage war. If we can’t convert my USD into munitions effectively, it doesn’t matter how rich we are in this context.

The crunch in RAM supply coming in 2026 will be double: AI on one side, yes, but also users of the monopolistic operating system moving off of Windows 10 into Windows 11 with its resource-hogging Web Apps.
The state of popular Windows 11 apps and their RAM management is concerning, especially as RAM prices continue to rise. 1. Discord is always 1GB and even hits up to 4GB 2. WhatsApp is now a web app, not a native app, and RAM usage is frequently 1GB 3. Microsoft Teams, also a web

Finally someone gets it - the digital euro is (fortunately) NOT a Central Bank Digital Currency, NOT a currency at all, and NOT any more digital than the current euro. It's a payment system, a digital wallet. Like PayPal, Apple Pay or Visa & MasterCard.

Europe continues to commit economic suicide to support US interests. Strategic autonomy is as distant as it can be.
We are deeply concerned by potential significant disruption to European vehicle manufacturing if the interruption of Nexperia chips supplies cannot be immediately resolved. On 10 October, #automobile manufacturers and their suppliers received notice from Nexperia outlining a

Effective drone defense might have more to do with bringing back WWII tactics than with introducing fancy expensive anti aircraft defenses....
The downing of an enemy reconnaissance UAV "ZALA" by ramming it with the wing of a Yak-52 aircraft from the 11th Separate Army Aviation Brigade. The aircraft was piloted by Colonel Kostyantyn Oboryn, an experienced pilot who repeatedly took to the skies to defend southern

I was losing track of all these AI vendor financing and cross participation deals. Finally a graph that displays them quite nicely - and it looks worse than the intra-family marriages of royal families in the Middle Ages.
With each passing day, the AI space looks more and more like home mortgage securitization at the peak of the housing bubble with its overlapping series of capital conveyor belts.

Had Trump and Merkel still been in power in 2022, the current #RussiaUkraineWar would not have occurred. The loss of her political weight in Europe and Biden embracing Ukrainian nationalists created the conditions for it.
Merkel is absolutely right: Poland and the Baltic states enjoy a big responsibility for triggering the war by refusing to allow the European Council to engage in direct talks with Putin. But she forgets who was pulling the strings behind the scenes: Washington. However, she

So after banning anti-establishment parties and suppressing the vote in the diasporas of Russia / Belarus as well as in Transnistria, all you manage to get in a rigged election is 50.2%? And this is being interpreted as a clear pro-EU mandate? What a joke! #moldovavotes #Moldova

Isn't this literally the definition of foreign interference - on the side of the EU in this case? Moldova is a country torn between east and west. Trying to shut off one part of society and forcing it into the West could turn Moldova into the next Ukraine.
Moldova's electoral commission has excluded the pro-Russia party Heart of Moldova from participating in the upcoming parliamentary elections this weekend.

Vendor financing at its finest. Which. Creates interdependencies and single points of failure. A lot of money is moving between AI companies, but how much is actually coming in from outside? Which creates
so let me get this right: Oracle says Openai committed $300B for cloud compute → oracle stock jumps 36% (best day since 1992) Oracle runs on Nvidia GPUs → has to buy billions in chips from Nvidia Nvidia just announced they're investing $100B into openai Openai uses that

I don't remember the US ever having fought a defensive war, let alone one on its territory, so this makes a lot more sense, but it should be named Department of Foreign Wars to be fully accurate.

In the West, people are used to equating language with nationality. Big mistake, specially in the case of Russian, which is as much a language of Ukraine as Ukrainian, independently of your ethnicity. Unfortunately, Ukrainian nationalists adopted the Western view.

This is the Hungarian region on the "wrong side" of the Carpathians that was given to Ukraine by Stalin in 1945. It will now be seamlessly connected by rail to Hungary, reestablishing the natural border on the Carpathians, at least as far as railway gauge is concerned.
❗️🇺🇦🚆 today, Ukraine has officially launched a European-standard railway line with a track gauge of 1435 mm, running parallel to the Soviet-era 1520 mm railways. This line will connect Uzhhorod with Bratislava, Košice, Budapest, and Venice. The Uzhhorod–Chop section is planned

If it is possible to declare victory with territorial losses, then this indeed could provide a pathway to a peace deal in Ukraine.
Finland defeated the USSR in the war, said Stubb. Well, those victories are clearly visible on the map of Finland’s lost territory. This is apparently a hint for the drug clown in Kiev on how to explain his upcoming ‘victory.’
