Self-driving feels like the early days of masking: everybody knew it was about to become a hyper polarized issue, but it wasn’t clear yet which team would pick which side of the issue, so there was a lot of bet hedging as the valence flipped back and forth before it crystallized.
This is definitely going to be a major culture war issue. One thing is that if AVs increase congestion (because the cost of time spent in a car goes down), then that’s going to impose significant costs on people who choose to keep driving.
