The Los Angeles Times has won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news for its coverage of L.A. council members making racist comments in leaked audio. The coverage led to changes in the 2nd largest city in the U.S. and the future of city council. https://t.co/rUMTS0Aogh

Audio of Councilmembers Nury Martinez, Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo speaking with labor leader Ron Herrera quickly became a new and incendiary issue in the Nov. 8 election.

Heartbroken isn't strong enough of a word to describe how I'm feeling right now. I'm 34 weeks pregnant with my first child and was about to go on leave. I'm not sure what's next, but I am so proud to have been a part of this newsroom these past 5+ years.

In our post-Roe world, questions loom as to the role police might play in enforcing new bans on abortion. To understand what that might look like, consider the LAPD's abortion squad, which interrogated women and arrested doctors for decades before Roe https://t.co/J8qfFcb1UF

In the 1950s and 1960s, the LAPD’s abortion squad hunted down women getting the procedure and the people performing them.

This is a huge loss for CNN - Brandon's work is essential, he is the best to work with and I will really miss his newsletter in my inbox every week. Whoever snags him next is really lucky!!!

There was a moment last month when @RickCarusoLA + @KarenBassLA were tied, according to her own polling. Somehow, Bass prevailed besting a ~$100 million campaign. Read the story of how it happened. w/@sherlyholmes

A late endorsement from former President Obama, along with the Supreme Court decision striking down Roe vs. Wade, helped propel Bass to victory.

Moving out of a newsroom will definitely be a huge change but I am so proud of the work I’ve gotten to do with the @CNNdatagraphics team and can’t wait to see all the great things they do next 🥲🥲🥲

👋🏽 today is my last day at CNN! I’ve learned so much over the last couple years (incl what BOLO means) and have gotten to work with some of the kindest, smartest people in the biz — I feel so lucky! Taking a lil break but I’m very excited to be starting @AppleNews next month!

THREAD: Los Angeles is known for sunshine and sprawl. But for the past three decades L.A. has been the most housing overcrowded large county in America. In the pandemic, L.A.'s overcrowded areas have suffered. We wanted to understand how it happened (1/16)

More homes are overcrowded in L.A. than in any other large U.S. county, a Times analysis of census data found — a situation that has endured for three decades.

Our latest: L.A. is known worldwide as the capital of single-family-home sprawl. Yet for three decades, it has had the most overcrowded housing among large counties in the United States. That's been a century in the making. https://t.co/pwBTG0halE

Some have begun discussing another, potentially more dramatic step to address the public’s outrage in the wake of the scandal: scrapping the maps of the council’s 15 districts and drawing new ones. @DavidZahniser + I asses the possibility and peril of this

In the furor over the racist leaked audio, calls are growing for the city to throw out the boundary lines drawn last year for the council’s 15 districts.

In the same leaked audio clips in which former L.A. City Council President Nury Martinez made racist remarks about Black people and Oaxacans, she also made crude remarks about Jewish people and Armenians. https://t.co/hbyuSJbqZl

No one is sitting. Everyone appears to be here except Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo, and Kevin De Leon. I’m told people can’t get into the building, it’s full. The chants are relentless. Mitch O’Farrell tried to make an announcement but is drowned by the chants.

Thread: for 2+ years the State Dept. has been bungling the US visa system. The wait time in New Delhi for a tourist visa is >800 days! Are we supposed to just accept gross government incompetence nowadays? In tomorrow’s @WSJ I argue that we shouldn’t...
