He didn’t get much to hit & was pitched around all year & still hit .559/.690/.966 w/ 9 HR, 13 doubles, 4 triples, 10-0 on the mound, 67.2 IP, 0.72 ERA, 107 K. Just turned 18. He is a reclassified.

The NYY don’t even draft SP anymore and they trade their top pitching prospect that they do find late(Thorpe, Fitts, Wesneski, Vasquez, Waldichuk, etc).
The highest draft pick in Elias era(Orioles GM) is Baumeister(comp B)..lol.

I loved Wallner coming out of college in the 2019 draft. He was the National Freshman of the Year in 2017, made the Collegiate National team in 2018, broke Southern Miss all-time HR record in 2019, all while having gross stuff as a RP(FB touched 97 w/ high 80s SL and a splitter).
I'm currently writing up Matt Wallner as a breakout and thought you should see this.

He’s always had the ML FB and pitching in those Low/High A bandboxes got him torched by the HR ball.

Purdy is tough as f*ck. Stares down the barrel and drops dimes all the time.
A Mr. Irrelevant outplayed a 1st round pick. That’s not supposed to happen in any situation.

The more I think about it, the more I think Bubba wins a rotation spot out of Spring Training next year(just like Jared Jones did this year). I just can’t see any reason to start him in AAA. Especially with him being PPI eligible.
This is not a season Pirates fans are going to look back on fondly ...
BUT the development of Paul Skenes and Jared Jones plus Bubba Chandler’s development in the minors gives the team a young rotation to dream about for years to come.

Khristian Curtis worked one inning on Thursday FB up to 97 mph mixed slider, CB, CHG and CT. Curtis is a 2023 12th round pick out of Arizona State.

Get used to this tweet, Tsung-Che Cheng is not a slap hitter!! 12-15 HR a year is more than doable with his revamped swing that is geared towards getting the ball in the air. He plays an above average SS as well.

The mistake the Pirates made was letting C.Bethancourt walk. He batted .281 with 14HR in 330AB last season in AAA Indy.
He’s killing it in Oakland this season too. Playing 1B as well. Also a right handed bat. Two things the Pirates desperately need this season.

Cleveland Guardians took my favorite RP in the whole draft, Cam Schuelke.
You gotta watch clips of him if you’ve never seen him pitch. Multiple arm slots and the stuff is gross. He’s been pretty much un-hittable at every stop.

One of my favorite lower level pitching prospects. Looks like the the Mariners got another steal in the SP department.
Bowen was a 13 round draft pick out of DII UNC Pembroke. Mariners also got Troy Taylor in the 12th and Marcelo Perez in the 11th round in the 2022 draft.
Just wrote a glowing report on Mariners Darren Bowen. Throws an outlier 95 mph FF with 18 IVB/12 hMov and a very low VAA. Two-Seam plays well down. Low-to-mid 80s sweeper gets ugly swings. Throws a two-plan curve on occasion. 6’3” and highly athletic.

Cam Junker is the 2nd best pitcher in Altoona. He just came in and shut down the heart of the Rockies AA affiliate. One being a Zac Veen K.
He’s been good at every other stop along the way too.
So far this season: 14 appearances, 16.1 IP, 1.65 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 0 HR, 10BB, 17K.

With Ashcraft on the 40 man, if the Pirates need a spot start they might go to him first. He needs stretched-out and to pitch deeper into games after last season’s strict innings limit and it being his first one back from TJ, but he’s the real deal!!

Imo, Dzierwa was the best pitcher in the portal. Huge get for Vandy. He’s 2025 eligible and pitching on the Cape for the Hyannis this summer.

Love the Sanford pick!! I had him had as a 1st rounder(and so did everyone else). No doubt, GG caliber SS. Looks like Griffin is gonna be an under-slot.

Sanford’s father had a cup of coffee in the Bigs with the Buccos. Wyatt is committed to Texas A&M. It may be tough to get Sanford to campus.

Pirates signing free agent Joe Perez(Houston Astros) is descent minor league free agent signing.
He was a former 2nd round pick out of HS in 2017, was an above slot signing and a top 10-15 prospect in the Astros system just a year ago.

I still think Swaggerty sees a MLB field. He’s a legit CF with a cannon arm. And he’ll hit enough, run enough for that defense to play.
He should’ve had that opportunity in 2022 or to begin last season with the Pirates.

Roansy Contreras needs to start throwing a CT. Hitters are recognizing a cutter’s spin and either spitting on it and it being called a strike or recognizing spin and thinking slider and are late. He needs something besides the 4S, SL/CB.

I love Brandan Bidois. He’s only in Low A(age 22) but was injured the last two seasons plus the 2020 Covid year(signed out of Australia in 2019). The Pirates might stretch him out next year but he’s been light-outs out of the Pen and throws filth. Look at the spin⬇️

Roansy Contreras only has one option left. An example of why you have to make sure a player is ready b4 he gets called up.
Screwing things up like this is a big deal. You can’t just lose a 23 year old pitcher with Roansy’s upside for nothing.
