I didn’t expect to ever say this but this was a fascinating read about PDFs. and how design choices Adobe made in the 90s made PDFs printable, not machine readable — now they have become a bottleneck for AI . instead of fixing the problem, an expensive industry of computer vision.
The PDF problem is a 30-year-old design choice still haunting modern software. Built for perfect printing in 1991 - now a major obstacle for AI-native tools. We went into the history, the hidden costs, and why we're building fantastically complex systems to solve it.

There’s no such thing as a rich but energy poor country.
The UK produces the least amount of electricity per capita out of all G7 countries, it's no surprise our energy is so expensive. If we don't want to end up in Spain's situation, we need to aggressively start building more grid connections and energy projects now.

It takes UK infra projects on average 8.5 years just to get through planning — meanwhile the world changes, politics changes, technology changes, workforces change and your plans are outdated before you even start . Across Europe, hundreds of billions are wasted in added project.
Britain isn’t short on talent or ideas. It’s being blocked. Blocked by environmental groups, activist lawyers and unaccountable quangos using the courts to kill the country’s future. Today we launch nomoredelays, the first public dashboard tracking the actual costs of these

Are blast furnace queens Sovereign Albion @andrewjb_ ?
We came here to document this place in what may be its final days. Once upon a time there were four blast furnaces working simultaneously. Queen Anne, Queen Bess, Queen Victoria and Queen Mary (they're the only plant to give them names, not numbers). Now only two running.

🏭 This is an excellent thread on one of the biggest industrial dramas playing out in Europe at the moment — the country that invented mass steel manufacturing is days away from losing the capacity to make it. The UK only has two active blast furnaces for primary steel production.
🚨EXCLUSIVE.Inside British Steel, the UK's last remaining primary steelmaker. First footage of the blast furnaces in half a decade. With the plant's Chinese owners preparing for its closure, this might be the last glimpse of virgin steelmaking in the country that invented it👇

Imagine you have one of the world‘s best talent magnets — but you don’t use it . Oxford University graduates just 50-60 MSc in CS per year and struggles to increase numbers due to its old college structures . Listening to @HarryStebbings conversation with Tom Hulme and Stan.
