Say what you want about the US, but this country has an *extraordinarily* deep bench of right-wing, super-influential billionaires you've never heard of until they pop up in a news article.
US colleges and universities: "Look at our global impact!"
Students: "OK, let's talk about your global investments."
US colleges and universities: **dials 911**
Steve-O: "All of these prolific potheads, I’ve been on their shows and it wasn’t so important to them to blow marijuana smoke in my face, but for Bill Maher it was a dealbreaker.”
"Jackass" star Steve-O says he got a request to appear on Bill Maher's podcast, but Maher refused not to smoke pot and called it "a dealbreaker."
"It’s very important that I maintain my sobriety, it’s approaching 16 years...I found it kind of upsetting"
If I leave Twitter, you can find me using the original social network: Rhode Island. First beta-tested in 1636, by a free-wheeling, outspoken guy who was suspended from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for violating its Terms of Service.
Things I've seen since moving back to Rhode Island in 2011:
-38 Studios meltdown.
-RI Speaker of the House indicted, hauled off to prison.
-"Cooler and Warmer" debacle.
-Loss of PawSox to Worcester.
BONUS ITEM: Lincoln Chafee's presidential run.
Strong headwinds for morale.
Something I've recently been appreciating about Providence. The city is:
-3 hours from NYC.
-1 hour from Boston.
-2 hours from Provincetown (& less for rest of the Cape).
-3 hours from Vermont, NH, and parts of Maine.
It's pretty amazing.
Random thought: Jewish history and teaching is so steeped in the (often historically grounded) trope of Jews as underdogs, oppressed, and/or persecuted by big bad forces. I think there’s a deep-rooted resistance to conceiving of ourselves as persecutors, bullies, oppressors.
I'm old enough to remember when Curt Schilling tried to explain that his collection of Nazi uniforms was "not a Nazi collection." (via
@lilsarg
)
Now he's sharing mini-treatises on the "Jewish Question."
My two cents: if you're an Ivy League prez who makes $1.5+ mil per year, leads a school that is one of Rhode Island's biggest employers and has a $6 billion endowment, do not describe yourself or the school as "powerless" when addressing angry students.
This detail toward the end of the NYT article about the belligerent 22-year-old guy who got drunk, groped flight attendants, punched another, and screamed about his net worth before being taped to a seat:
State employee who is paid $174,490 per year goes on work trip, representing state, to Philadelphia. Host company in Philly sends alarmed email to gov's office after visit. Email is initially withheld, then released. It is -- not surprisingly -- quite bad.

It's not every day that a producer for Tucker Carlson reaches out to me asking for help with a segment. So it's not every day I get the chance to write this kind of reply.
Shout out to
@MacFarlaneNews
, whom I discovered via his reporting on January 6. And I remain in awe of him.
The J6 story is sprawling, and Scott has been **all over it**, giving it the attention and professionalism it deserves, even as much of the culture moves on (and forgets).
For a state brimming with culinary delights, it's hard to imagine a more visually unappetizing marketing campaign.
Who sees this and says, "I want to go there and try that"?
I have some exciting news to share: I'm writing a book for
@SteerforthPress
! It's the story of Dr. Paul Volkman, a college and med-school classmate of my father who is serving four life terms in prison for prescription drug-dealing. More here: .
Yesterday I realized that there's no "The" in front of "Ocean State" on RI's new license plates and now this will bother me forever.
We're not *an* ocean state. We're *The* Ocean State.
Well, it's finally here: Pub Day for "Prescription for Pain."
I'm pleased to report that this 15-years-in-the-making work of investigative journalism is now available for purchase. More info here:
I'm eager to hear your thoughts on this story.
Two years ago, this month, I started taking antidepressants. They've been a game-changer for me.
By no means do I think meds are for everyone. That's a decision to make with a doctor (and prob a therapist, too).
But perhaps my story will be helpful.
I admit. I did not have "Wayland Square Lululemon boarded up to ward off looters, while surveillance helicopters buzz overhead because there's a 9 p.m. curfew" on my Providence 2020 bingo card.
Rhode Island's GOP gubernatorial candidate, Ashley Kalus, who moved to RI earlier this year and was registered to vote in Florida until March, pumped $4.7 million of her own money into a campaign that lost by 18 percentage points. Graphic via

Today I got a DM from a local librarian telling me that my book has been ordered by its first Rhode Island public library, in Pawtucket. The tipster said: "You are an author in the Ocean State Libraries catalog!" I am deeply touched by this. 🥹🥹

April 18, 1981, the Pawtucket Red Sox began a game against the Rochester Red Wings. After 32 innings, the game was suspended at 4:07AM on April 19th. It was the longest professional baseball game in history. A final inning was played on June 23rd, & the Sox won, 3-2.

My "Not in group chats that use the N-word or otherwise involve earnest bigotry" T-shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my shirt.
A random election-night thought:
@tednesi
is a national treasure, who happens to live and work in RI. Just a tireless, consummate pro who's also an exceedingly nice and refreshingly un-cynical guy.
Rhode Island's embarrassment of a "historian laureate," Patrick Conley, is once again trying to get us to think about slavery as "common practice at that time" -- this time, while defending Christopher Columbus in the

The mayor of Cranston is outraged that
@Topgolf
is calling their soon-to-open facility "Topgolf Providence" instead of "Topgolf Cranston"
"if they want to have it Topgolf Providence, take the poles down, take the building down and move it to Providence"
This story is incredible.
Only in Rhode Island does a TV-news channel's investigation team *accidentally* witness an investigation-worthy story while working on another piece.
NEW: DPW employees using town equipment worked on a property owned by North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi and his family. Second in command at DPW suspended.
I'm never mad about Providence getting favorable press. But I am amused at how the city is perpetually being "discovered" by national/regional media outlets.
A thread:
Semi-regular reminder that Providence, RI is 3 hours from Vermont + the White Mountains, 1 hour from Boston, 3ish hours from NYC, and less than one hour from all kinds of beaches.
As much as I love living here, I also love how easy and quick it is to go to other amazing places.
I feel like coverage of David Cicilline's new gig at the Rhode Island Foundation should always mention the salary.
Yes, it's philanthropy. But it's also **really** lucrative work. via

Herschel Walker was so wildly unqualified & unfit for the U.S. Senate. It was -- & remains -- astonishing that his candidacy got as far as is did. It was like some kind of dystopian performance-art project. But it was real.
A prime example of how unhinged the GOP has become.
We're all quite lucky to live in a time where
@JasonLeopold
is at the top of his
#FOIA
game, and has the resources to sue and get the docs he asks for. The materials he pries loose -- and has been prying loose for years -- is astonishing and essential.
Hard to know what to say about what's unfolding in Gaza at this point.
As a Jew, I am aghast and horrified at Israel's actions and rhetoric.
As an American, I am ashamed of this country's complicity.
As a human being, I am grieving ever-greater losses of innocent life.
My hot take about media for the day (with apologies to my friends in local TV news) is that 99% of car crashes and fires have virtually no news value and any time spent covering them on local TV news would be better spent discussing long-term systemic issues in their communities.
JUST IN: RIDOT has released the inspection report from over the weekend that led to the closure of the Washington Bridge
@wpri12
has posted all the photos of the damage to the bridge here, along with the full PDF of the report
Today is my 39th birthday. And I feel very blessed and grateful for my health and this exciting professional moment. (My pub day and bday synced up almost exactly. 🤯)
The only thing I (pictured below) could ask for is for you to read and/or buy my book or help spread the word.
Have you heard the buzz?
@DelsLemonade
is turning 75 this year!
