In dimension one (a circle), with @Churi_F and @cecidevita we proved the existence of a whole family of twisted states (we can describe them) with high probability as the number of nodes goes to infinity. I hope you enjoy the paper!.

This problem is not exclusively associated to sync problems. It appear also when we train an artificial neural network (we want to understand what is going to be the outcome of the training) and in many physical phenomena.

The problem of global sync vs alternative patterns is equivalent to the uniqueness (or not) of local minima of the energy function associated to the system. That is, what are the possible limits when we do gradient descent. Every local minimum is a possible limit state.

Random geometric graphs are constructed by choosing points at random in some space and then declaring two nodes to be neighbors if they are close to each other (in some predetermined sense). They are a very natural model to represent spatial interactions.

Inspired by the Thai fireflies and many other real situations, we were looking for a proof of their ubiquity in random geometric graphs.

This "twisted" stable states have been shown to exist for some graphs with lots of symmetries that allow to compute them explicitly.

. as it is the case with the fireflies in Thailand, in which the phases of neighboring nodes are slightly shifted.

But in nature we can observe other patterns, for example with the fireflies in Thailand, in which the phases of neighboring nodes are slightly shifted.
