I think something I see a lot of people misunderstand about Drakengard 3 is the REASON for its sexual nature. It isn’t just sexual for “hahah funny.” Zero as a character has deep rooted sexual trauma, particularly from being sold to be a sex worker from an early age.
DrakeNieR is crazy cause Yoko Taro could say “706f6f7020627574742066617274206c6f6c” and people would scramble together for years to find the significance behind it
Angelus’s “Angelegna” design as seen in “Super Space-Time Character Exchange Roundtable in Shinjuku”
Caim is staring at her and blushing… they’re so cute

Every intoner represents not only a part of Zero, but a different coping mechanism for sexual trauma. Five is hypersexuality, Four is locking up sexual desire, Three is kinky stuff, Two is sexual desire based on infatuation, and One is legitimate asexuality.
(7/8)
I don’t care if you like Drakengard 3 or not, it’s not a game for everyone. It’s a mess and it HARDLY functions on the only console it was released on, but I think it’s incredibly refreshing to see a game tackle a topic seen as taboo in the game industry so well.
(8/8)
If you are unhappy that there are adult topics in this video game meant for adults, that’s kind of on you. You feel uncomfortable? Good, think about how Zero feels. Think about how every victim of sexual abuse feels.
(3/8)
Even outside of sexual trauma, each Intoner still represents a part of Zero. Five is her greed, Four is her rude nature, Three is her slowly dwindling sanity, Two is who she could of been if she had a normal life, and One is her hatred for how the world fucked her over.
(4/8)
Drag-on Dragoon 3 - Story Side (a canon fifth branch, one which leads to Drakengard 1) explains this in detail, if you are curious to hear the official explanation. This book also explains that Zero isn’t as into sex as she claims to be.
(6/8)
She lets these men sexually harass her every single day, every single mission not only because she feels guilt for giving them life in the first place, but because she feels like an object in the first place, again, having spent most of her life as a prostitute.
(5/8)
The Utahime Five manga shows us what happens when Intoners can’t control their powers, and the disciples are created to combat that. Sex helps control that, but Zero doesn’t need all goth disciples. She feels guilt for creating them, she doesn’t simply want to bed them.

I'm just staying the obvious. Gamer target audience are nerdy male virgins. You want to sell to them? You better cater to demand.
Come on, you think FF7 - Rebirth made historical sale bc of good story? great gameplay? pphsstt... nah...
First off, let’s get this out of the way: Drakengard 2 is canon, but not in the way you might think. Drakengard 2 takes place after an alternate timeline’s version of Drakengard’s Ending A, as stated in the Drag-on Dragoon 3 Complete Guide + Settings book.
I can’t believe this needs to be said but when woman are preyed, maybe don’t blame the victim????? Someone dressing up as a fictional character you drool over is not an excuse to comment on that person sexually or god forbid fucking touch them.
Now that we have that out of the way, let’s discuss the concept behind the game’s story as a whole: Taking place 18 years after the original, this game features Caim as a major antagonist, fighting for Angelus. It also features Manah, now an adult, working with the protagonist
Since nobody asked:
NieR Replicant ver 1.22
Drakengard 3
Drakengard
NieR Gestalt & Replicant
NieR:Automata
NieR Re[in]carnation
SINoALICE
Drakengard 2
Keep in mind my SINoALICE opinions are based on only what was translated before EOS.
@Angelus_Project
I don’t car if people enjoy the game or not, I’m just tired of misinterpretations of the story being so prevalent. The flower creates more of a need for sex, not a desire. Rose’s trauma doesn’t just disappear when she takes on the flower, it sticks to the end.
Now, conceptually, a lot of this sounds great. A game featuring Manah as a protagonist attempting to right her past wrongs and battling Caim who at this point only cares about Angelus SEEMS amazing, but in practice the writing behind the game falls apart.
In Ending A Nowe refuses to fuse with the bone casket, Legna fights him, revealing his “newbreed” form, a cross between human and dragon. Eris sacrificed herself to become the Goddess of the Seal.
Nowe is a boring protagonist. Drakengard is a series where every character has deep cutting character flaws like normal human beings, but Nowe lacks any of that. He’s a very standard/bland RPG protagonist, he wants to do good because he believes it’s right.
Besides Manah and Nowe, featured party members are Eris, a Knight of the Seal who grew up alongside Nowe, and Urick, an ex-Knight of the Seal who lost his mortality in a pact with the Reaper.
The story surrounds Nowe leaving the Knights of the Seal and attempting to free the kingdom of their rule. In order to free Angelus from the seal established in DoD1 Ending A they fight Caim, who’s spent his years protecting her.
With the Goddess dead, the world begins to revert to its DoD1-isms. The party travels to the “bone casket,” a massive seed of destruction. This then splits into 3 possible branches.
The protagonist, Nowe, was born as a result of Inuart place Furiae’s body in the seed of destruction in the first game. He’s raised by Legna, the black dragon who destroyed Caerleon and killed Caim’s parents.
Hey I didn’t expect so many people to see this, thanks everyone! You guys should all read Thou Shalt Not Die, Yoko Taro’s manga. It might be canon to DrakeNieR, and it’s VERY good and weird
Also follow me if you like these games!
I've been on estrogen for a little bit over a year now! I'm gonna make this a longer thread about transitioning, so advice below! Thank you so much btw!
matters worse this is in Drakengard of all things, a series generally known for having well written women. I have absorbed so much DrakeNieR content, some amazing some poor. The US NieR comic, Drakengard Judgment, the Java port of DoD1, but none of these come close to…
@KAINENlER
This artwork and the short story that accompanied it predate The release of DoD3, Dito, Cent, Octa and a beta design for Decadus are present in order to tease the game. None of the Intoner's designs had been revealed yet, but Zero and Mikhail appear in the story for a second :DDD
Honestly, if you haven’t played it, I would suggest giving Drakengard 2 a try. It’s interesting to look at in retrospect, and it’s certainly not an awful game by any means.
If you’ve read this far, thank you so much! Feel free to input thoughts below!
Eris also has the worst scene I have ever seen in any piece of DrakeNieR media. It’s a flashback to her youth with Nowe, where she states she got her first period and she’s “a woman now” and needs Nowe to protect her. Now, this is clearly incredibly misogynistic, but to make…
Manah, however, is fairly well written in Drakengard 2. Her constant battle with herself and her past actions while trying to be a better person and forgive herself is honestly really interesting, especially given her relationship with Caim.
All in all, Drakengard 2 is a very flawed game, but not one made completely poorly. Personally, I would have loved to see a game featuring Manah is the primary protagonist and Caim as the primary villain. I want a remake of this game more than any other in the series…
It has so many interesting concepts that it fails to flesh out in an interesting way. A remake that follows the main branch’s DoD1 Ending A could be amazing, rehauling the story to fit the main branch canon, rewriting characters to be more in line with other entries.
Eris refuses to listen to Nowe, making her an often frustrating character to interact with. Her loyalty to a fault is interesting in concept, but it ends up just making many people dislike her for attacking Nowe after he leaves the Knights
In Ending C Nowe saves Manah and kills Legna. This ends the existence of Gods and Dragons alike, save for the sequel bait of seeing one last Dragon afterwards.
