This (the people around him I mean) is a symptom of zero sum status game attitude toward money. And yeah that is by no means the only possible attitude one can have toward money.
one of my most elitist beliefs is that most people have plenty of money and are just incredibly bad with it. when I enlisted in the military I was stunned by how much I made and how easy it was to save and then a bunch of people around me spent a ton and complained about wages.

This is my take on selves btw, idk if what some people mean by "self is an illusion" is really about the SENSE of self bc I cannot fathom self being an illusion. Subject is an intrinsic property of experience.
@pli_cachete It implies having a self but not necessarily a sense of one.
