As I've said here before, we do not prevent suicide by "assessing for safety." That's a lawyer's worldview, or an administrator's We prevent suicide by creating a meaningful human connection where patients feel seen, heard, and understood in a relationship where they matter

Nor is it just a composition of these, eg friendship and teaching. You can know most everything about being a good friend, coach, trainer, teacher, adviser, consultant, medical doctor and still know VERY LITTLE about being able to build a psychotherapy relationship. 4/4

How often is this heard in therapy. Choices become recognised and the client can move towards "I would like to do xyz but I do find that difficult" On the surface a small change but the difference is significant.

The outcomes research and deliberate practice folks need to chill the fuck out and allow for ordinary good work and progress. If I'd referred out clients by the 7th session because we weren't making progress I'd have failed to learn from the patients who taught me the most.
