I don't like to use my platform for big statements often, but discord recently had a WIP blog post on a partnership with Axie, a community that exploits people in an MLM structure, indebting new users & making people share personal data.

Discord made their create channel endpoint reliant on OpenAI's API working, because AI picked emojis for channels are apparently critical.
Channel actions are now 500ing because the dumb ai channel emoji feature relies on a 3rd party API and there's 0 error handling.

Large bots have previously ran afoul of automated anti-abuse by accident and had it ran back, so this action being unintentional wouldn't be entierly unexpected.

It turns out this is because Russia requested a russian femboy server be blocked in their region, which discord both complied with and updated strings for 😭

This thread is deeply upsetting because the D&D server had an elite mod team from Discord themselves at launch.
I was part of that team, it was some of the best work I've done & I loved the community.
But WOTC chose modsquad, one of the worst moderation agencies, for long term.
Since joining the D&D Official Discord (run by WOTC), I have been doing immense amounts of labour trying to help people understand/deconstruct racist tropes in the game.
I even made a public Discord thread called "Critical Deconstruction of Race in D&D".

Attackers can:
• Send messages in any channel
• Prune
• Ban
Remove perms from Carl while this is fixed, if you use any of botlabs' other bots (yagpdb, ayana, piggy), those may be vulnerable too.
Never assume bots are secure, folks.
Mass panic broke out in the Deadlock official discord as someone exploited a bot to say that Deadlock was shutting down tomorrow in the the official announcements channel

Overall, I'm really not concerned with this change on the ToS. Discord has no reason to care what you're saying in a VC. It does, however, have features that can enrich VCs that require recording.

Primarily they're a helpdesk agency, they just dipped their toes into moderation. Many mods are underpaid & have no idea how discord works. They use faceless accounts & don't build the community.

Carl, YAGPDB, Ayana, FredBoat & more are all owned by BotLabs, a child company of BlueStacks.
BlueStacks enforces a very concerning privacy policy on all of these bots & have used them to advertise before, without consent from bot developers.

Between 01:50 - 03:00 GMT today, Discord exposed ALL user connections, regardless of visibility settings.
The data exposed included usernames on private connections like PayPal (default private) & Facebook.

One of the NPM packages used in the bot contains the malware and gets automatically executed on your device as soon as you install the bot's dependencies (through a post install script). Still a user fault technically, but it's not something you will immediately think about

When you're adding a bot, there's some things you need to look at:
- Bot verification
- Server count
- Creation date
- Server permissions (NEVER GIVE ADMIN)
- OAuth2 scopes
- Redirect URL

NEVER give bots permissions they don't explicitly need! Any developer that sets their bot to ask for the Admin permission is lazy or malicious. There is no good reason for ANY bot to have it.
Be careful with adding roles to your bots for this exact reason too.

Giving employees access to millions of servers seems slightly irresponsible, no?
Then again this is the same company that violated GDPR to market NFTs.
MEE6 taking another L on my bday, based.
Some servers have reported MEE6 being used to post unwanted messages. There is no technical breach in our systems. This was due to one of our employee's account getting compromised.
✅ The issue is now fixed and we've taken all the steps to make sure it never happens again.

Many thoughts on this. Few I'll share here.
Discord is definitely changing and priorities are shifting. I'm not sure what the discord of 2024 is going to look like, which is not a very reassuring feeling.
Hoping for silver linings and better news in future.
Discord is no longer accepting new servers into the Discord Partner Program. Existing Discord Partners will keep their perks, but the program as is will cease to exist.
