@effortfuleduktr I think this is one of the major failing of our education systems. We haven't managed to persuade our students that when we assess their work, we are trying to assess the quality of the thinking that led to the work, for which the work is a proxy...

Composing alongside conventions will yield not only better writers, but also more engaged writers.

Iโ€™m continually puzzled by programs that make encoding a prerequisite for composing. Instead, we should take a parallel approach where we teach composition and conventions next to each other. Without this we miss the compositional thinking of children when they are making books.

What a joy it was to provide teachers feedback today as they implement proficiency scales and student agency at Lafayette County C-1! Great work going on here! #kdfiredup โฆ@KDFIREDUPโฉ โฆ@AaronKnipmeyerโฉ

Much of what youโ€™ve been told about long-term goals is wrong. The most successful people donโ€™t follow a straight path. They zig and zag. Hereโ€™s whyโ€”and how you can use the same approach: ๐Ÿงต

When Tier 1 is the engine driving everything: Achievement increases Misbehaviors decline Learning happen Stop throwing money, programs, interventions & the kitchen sink at Tiers 2 & 3. Tier 1 is where our work is & the problems get solved. It requires intentional design

The value of this cannot be overstated! Writing identity is a make or break aspect of student achievement.

Quantitative evidence of the impact of teacher-student relationships on achievement is thin on the ground, so this paper on the positive benefits of "looping" (teaching the same class for more than one year) by @MatthewAKraft and colleagues is important:

Some believe the majority of learning happens when the teacher's teaching. The majority of the learning happens when the learners are engaging in the task. The teacher prepped this learning with information, knowledge, skills & tools. But they are learning in the doing.

Weโ€™re starting to post weekly updates to the LanguageComp website. This weekโ€™s video shows a student orally rehearsing. Watch closely; itโ€™s fascinating to see how many crafting techniques he uses-before heโ€™s even written his first review. Enjoy!

Teaching, not just USING the writing process: This student is thinking about what genre & topic she will write. She is also doing an author study where she studies the work of Nicola Davies and tries it out in her writing. Such powerful moves @Mattglover123 talks about!

Sometimes we have to step back & ask: Am I just giving kids "work" to do in compliance? Work that I will give a grade for? OR Am I designing a task that produces evidence of learning? A task that kids will monitor, assess, reflect & revise?
