HNSW is a great algorithm for static datasets, particularly if they fit in RAM. But I think it sucks for a relational database and we can do much better. We've based our novel implementation on two papers from Microsoft Research, SPANN and SPFresh.

I'm stoked to showcase our implementation of vector search for PlanetScale. This is not a HNSW plug-in for MySQL (like pgvector, etc), it's a full fledged index managed by InnoDB that scales into terabytes of vector data.
