Question: “What scares you? Anything?”
Oscar: “I mean, sharks are pretty scary. I feel like someone’s going to give a really philosophical answer, and everyone’s gonna go ‘Ahhhh’.”
Logan: “I think what scares me most is not living up to my full potential.”
Just realized that AT didn’t even tweet anything about Nyck, there was nothing before or after the announcement. I get that this sport is cruel but really? Not even a thank you post? I’m not even a fan of Nyck but my heart absolutely breaks for him and his fans.
Oscar on seeing Ricciardo next to him for Sky Sports: "I don't know what would've happened in the crash but... obviously if you're coming into that corner, it's blind [inaudible] so maybe he saw me too late and turned to the wall instead of into me, so if he did, thank you."
I understand that, without my agreement, Alpine F1 have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year.
“F*ck, the safety car ruined it. It would’ve been P2-P3.”
“Yeah, yeah! For Oscar.”
“For Oscar, yeah. Oscar had an insane start. Oscar would’ve overtaken me.”
“Mate, I went side by side with Oscar into copse. I said ‘don’t understeer, don’t understeer.’”
• First year in F1
• Had a year out
• Youngest driver on the grid
• Only 50% of the upgrades
• P3 in qualifying
• P4 in the race
Oscar Piastri is here to stay. He deserves so much credit for today’s performance. Let’s go get them!
Mama Piastri needs to share her tips with Ollie's dad. They might have to organize a parents association at this point because I can't even imagine the stress.
Oscar when he wins his F1 first race: Yeah… obviously an amazing day. Mega job from the team. But the highlight of my day was this chicken sandwich I had a few minutes ago. It was pretty good.
I know Oscar's (positive) attitude about missing out on his first podium in F1 might seem surprising but this is the same guy who spent an entire season tweeting his DRS problems in F3. If all those DRS issues didn't break him, nothing can.
The funniest thing about this is that Max was about to continue but Oscar already turned around 😭 He’ll have another shot at maxplaining with Oscar this year hopefully 😁
I’m sorry for repeating myself but let’s just take this in:
- First season
- First time in Qatar
- Had only ONE practice session
- Didn’t race at all in 2022
- Second youngest driver in the sprint race (after Lawson)
The future of this sport is so bright. Thank you Oscar!
Lando wasn't wrong when he (jokingly) called Oscar a silent killer: he works hard and he lets his result speak for him. Oscar's goal was to enter F1 on merit and he proves every race weekend that he truly earned everything he has accomplished in his career.
“Oscar… catching your breath. I believe you’ve been given DOTD as well, so it’s been a really good weekend for you.”
“I thought you were gonna say I’ve been given a 5-second penalty again for track limits. Scared the crap out of me.”
This man is unreal 😭
Best rookie of the year talk aside, Oscar is one of the most talented young drivers we’ve had IN YEARS. He fought Max at the beginning, matched much more experienced Lando, and almost closed the gap to Lewis at the end. On hard tyres. I’m so excited about his future in F1.
The best thing about the mistake the producers made labeling Lando’s grandparents as Oscar’s is that it was an easy mistake to make. Look at Oscar just casually talking to his teammate’s grandma. He really gets along with everyone.
Zak: “As our regulator, they (the FIA) have the responsibility and authority to make sure everyone in F1 is conducting themselves in a way that’s appropriate to the sport’s values, both on and off the track. […] I just hope that the FIA has full transparency.”
How it’s done! 👏
Oscar (over the radio):
“Contact. I was squeezed into the wall by the Ferrari. I’m out. I’ll try to get back to the garage.”
“I don’t know what he was doing. I was there and he just turned in like I didn’t exist.”
“Oscar’s mom… she wants to come here for race day. Can you organize her a flight, please?”
“I am very happy to buy her airline tickets so… if you can get here, Mrs Piastri, we wanna see you tomorrow.”
Problem solved
@NicolePiastri
😄
Oscar’s dad bought an 81 cap for an Oscar fan he met today, Oscar’s grandma made lamingtons for the team (and continued the tradition from last year), Oscar’s mom always shows support online and interacts with the fans… the Piastri family is just so lovely.
Nobody is even asking the drivers to speak against Red Bull but a simple "We should always strive for a secure and comfortable work environment for everyone in F1, and I hope all teams take measures to ensure that" would be a lot better than... most comments we heard today.
I understand that, with my agreement, Williams Racing have put out a press release this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is right and I have signed a contract with Williams for 2023. I will be driving for Williams next year.
😂 let’s gooo
@williamsracing
💪
Yes, he did. P2.
This makes Oscar’s best career result in F1. McLaren’s rookie driver, after a year out, just got P2 on his favourite track during his 12th race weekend in F1.
(He really likes Spa btw)
Simon: “Are you a better driver than Mark Webber?”
Oscar: “Huh… yeah… yes. I’ve played the lie detector, the lie detector doesn’t know.”
Simon: “Was he a better driver than S. Vettel?”
Oscar: “I mean… statistics say no. […] I’m looking for a new manager now.”
He panicked 😭
Mama Piastri had to cancel her plane tickets last year, after a false alert that Oscar would finally get a free practice session. He did not.
Today, she’s looking for a plane ticket to see her son start from the first row.
It’s crazy how much can change in a year.
“Where’s Fernando? That one’s easy.” “Where’s Lewis? That’s also an easy one.” Oscar pretty much called Lewis and Fernando free points in today’s Grill the Grid video
Simon: “Do you believe you’re gonna win a race this year.”
Oscar: “Yes.”
Simon: “Do you believe you’ve got the car to do that?”
Oscar: “Yes.”
You heard it here first 👀
Lando’s dad has posted the “McLaren dads” picture again! 😄
It’s amazing how mutually supportive their families are, always celebrating the results of both drivers.
Oscar thanked the mechanics four times in less than a minute on his radio after the race ended. He kept thanking the team in his post-race interviews. His first and only social media post after the race centers the work of the McLaren mechanics. He's a true team player.
YES, YES, YES. P3!!!!!!!! OSCAR PIAS-THREE.
OSCAR DID NOT ONLY SCORE POINTS. HE’S ON THE PODIUM FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HIS F1 CAREER.
FIRST SEASON. FIRST TIME IN JAPAN. FIRST TIME WITH THE LATEST UPGRADES.
@OscarPiastri
EVERYONE!
Pretty sure that Oscar has never seen this account, but if he did, I hope he had a good laugh knowing he signed a contract 2 months ago and I just kept tweeting “no” every day all stressed out
YES. Oscar did score points today.
OSCAR PIASTRI IS THE WINNER OF THE SPRINT RACE IN QATAR.
First season. First race in Qatar. You’re unbelievable,
@OscarPiastri
! I feel so emotional, I have no words.
I see people getting confused over Oscar’s excitement level so to keep it short: this IS Oscar being excited. 😅
Let me introduce you to one of his finest radio moments:
Oscar for GQ: “Blowing tyres like this, your chances of finishing a race are pretty slim. Lewis Hamilton has once finished a race on three inflated tyres at Silverstone once and won the race. […] I think the last time we’ll see that for quite a long time.”
Mama Piastri needs to share her tips with Ollie's dad. They might have to organize a parents association at this point because I can't even imagine the stress.
Oh wow, Oscar's dad gave an interview and he's traditionally very calm but he was "jumping up and down like crazy" on Saturday after qualifying. He also said the car's going in a right direction "for both the boys" and that he's happy for both Oscar and Lando.
Lewis has shared Oscar’s latest post on his story and left a comment on the post. Oscar has named Lewis as one of his racing role models growing up in several interviews, so this is really incredible to see. I love that he’s receiving so much support from other drivers.
F1 icks: Spa edition
Going around filming people, without their consent, and posting it online to shame them instead of letting them enjoy themselves. If people want to dress up for an event THEY paid for, let them. It’s that simple.
You leave F1 fans without racing for a few weeks and now we have Alonso making Tiktoks about Taylor Swift, how do you even explain this to people who don't watch the sport?!
I don't know who needs to hear this but just because Oscar often doesn't drive like a rookie, or acts like a rookie off the track, doesn't mean that he's not a rookie and that he doesn't need any time to learn and adapt. He deserves that space as much as any other driver.
This is Oscar’s favourite track. He wasn’t here since F3 and he kept saying how happy he was to finally be racing here. He had such a fantastic weekend until now. I’m absolutely devastated.
Oscar has genuinely brought so much excitement to the sport this year, on and off the track. He’s constantly proving that his seat was well-earned, that it’s not only a result of raw talent but hard work. Yet, he’s so effortlessly funny and so humble about his accomplishments.
Oscar qualified P18 in Bahrain and had to retire after 15 laps during the race due to a steering wheel issue.
Since then, he became a sprint race winner, a double podium sitter and he’s about to have his third top 3 start tomorrow.
It’s been a crazy season.
Alex: “We can expose Oscar right now. Oscar must be the worst padel player in F1. He was awful. In Australia… you think they’d be quite good at it.”
Logan: “But then he’d hit some good shots.”
Logan’s saving Oscar’s image 😭😭
YES. Oscar did score points today.
Oscar said earlier this week that the highest McLaren might reach was P4, and that’s exactly what he did. Great job
