Our discovery shows how the brain quickly pivots to "self-preservation mode" as soon as stroke happens. What we want to find out next is - how can we enhance this capability to protect the brain from stroke damage?.

We find that within 1 hour of stroke, the brain begins to reorganise its network by fine-tuning synapses - the communication points. While synapses in the stroke-affected areas shut down to preserve energy, synapses on the other side of the brain step up to compensate.

. The first few hours of stroke make the difference between disability, life, and death. What are the built-in mechanisms protecting the brain? I's not quite clear, and it's difficult to develop new treatments without knowing these mechanisms.

Basically, it looks like a little bit of body heat can go a long way towards getting stuff places. Therefore, every NHS hospital should have a sauna or a gym or a year-round excessively sunny beer garden. Or just the latter, to save taxpayers' money.

This is kind of neat, because sometimes we really want an antibody to get into the brain, e.g. if this antibody is a expensive fancy drug against Alzheimer's.or an expensive fancy drug against brain cancer.or an inexpensive no-so-fancy drug against cancer metastases in the brain.

Basically, we show that temperatures equivalent to ordinary fever or hyperthermia can induce membrane trafficking in various tissues. This in turn may allow an antibody to get from the bloodstream into the brain, which normally doesn't really happen.

Ta-da! Behold my paper describing a new mechanism for action of (almost) all antidepressants. It's membrane trafficking, and it can bring stuff into the brain. Now, can this help bring new fancy Alzheimer's drugs into the brain?. <TBC, subject to £££>.
