Does the United States need an “end state” for its China Policy? How would a “vision for victory” in relation to China impact European policymakers? @oertel_janka explores this topic in her chapter of the latest @CSIS report: https://t.co/OikX9TIWP9

Just putting⬇️ up again as news breaks that the German chancellor wants to overrule coalition partners & vote „no“ although there is apparently no qualified majority against the tariffs…highly troubling signal towards Brussels and Washington alike…to say the least…
EU member states should endorse tariffs on Chinese EVs or risk undermining European interests and agency

This one is a must listen. If you want to understand the balance of risk in Australia-China relations, important to see how our friends in other liberal democracies see the story – and how it rhymes with their own @NSC_ANU @oertel_janka @ecfr

The EU is proving increasingly ill-equipped to deal with growing geoeconomics-related issues, mostly because of scattered responsibilities between the Commission and MS. This calls for a bold remedy: the appointment of a geoeconomics VP.

🚗 The EU announced it would impose additional tariffs of up to 38% on Chinese EVs as a step to reduce risk exposure to China in a key green industrial sector. Read more about the impact of EU intervention on risk reduction: https://t.co/ogYwdN1OTJ

1/ The EU has announced duties with surprising elements: 1) very high levels compared to other anti-subsidy cases, 2) very varying impacts on different producers, 3) and an emphasis on a potential negotiated solution.

This is a strong signal from Brussels. Also one that makes clear that transparency matters. EU is making use of the tools it has and the rules it has set.
So here it is BYD: 17,4%; Geely: 20%; and SAIC: 38,1%. Other BEV producers in China, which cooperated in the investigation but have not been sampled, subject to the following weighted average duty: 21%. All other BEV producers in China which did not cooperate: 38,1%.

https://t.co/ApuBQKdAwT I greatly recommend reading @JrgenMatthes2 great contribution: stunning results in survey of 900 German companies. All feel the pressure and 80% regard countermeasures as justified or at least partially justified Not just the loud industry voices matter.

European policymakers need to answer the ‘trust question’ of how far they want Chinese companies involved in green industries such as solar energy, batteries, and electric vehicles.
