I'll take Cars over A Bugs Life in a heartbeat but yeah Cars was more a victim of pretty good in an era of greatness from Pixar and it being in between the Brad Bird movies
Think of Pixar's run from 95-2010. Hated is kinda strong, it was just clearly their weakest and most by the numbers. Felt like a parody of their own style, talking cars had felt pretty trite by then and theres nothing about its story that felt suprising or groundbreaking.
