The study of crystals inspires models that inspire the study of statistics to further inspire the cutting edge AI of today. Interestingly, the motivation to understand how the brain works has produced amazing results in AI, yet we still don't know how the brain works.
BREAKING NEWS.The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 #NobelPrize in Physics to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.”

The Eiffel Tower is just as iconic of France as croissants and baguettes, and equally emblematic of Paris, standing alongside landmarks like Notre-Dame or the Arc de Triomphe.

Surprising. If only it was that simple. The 'winning mentality' prevents innovation, as motivations end after a few wins and complacency sets. It also clouds the development of deeper intrinsic motivations. Winning is a mere side-effect of those. Rediscover the core @ericschmidt.

My current take: what we call intelligence is high density of exported entropy during its minimisation, which is a fundamental property of the universe. Lower values of this are things like planet formation, crystallization and basic life forms. Its 1st derivative is positive.
I agree with @DrJimFan. Life, with all its midblowing structure, is about creating order in a universe of increasing disorder, see e.g. for an easy intro. Like a cell, a neural network during training takes energy to minimise disorder, that is to predict.
