@ashwrya7
Spent 3 hours once in a cafe in Paris explaining functioning of diff apps, clearing storage, sending photos to select contacts on whatsapp, other stuff to an old lady ( started of as just lending a charger)
She was so grateful. Sent me her garden pictures everyday for 3 weeks.
I hear stories of marriages breaking, love fading all around
A dear friend, who had found love in her early 30s & somehow circumstances didn't let them be together. The person came back in her life when she is 36 & they are madly in love. Just needed to see this good in world 😊
One aspect which pinches me about India, coming back to Europe is the lack of pedestrian and cycle concern in any urban infrastructure planning. Only city which aces on it is Chandigarh (2nd pic)
Every episode of 'Plants of the Gods' by the brilliant Mark Plotkin just pulls me deeper and deeper into the world of ethnobotany, pharmacopoeia and psychedelic research.
Glimpses from 3 episodes here:
Finally started on my 'acquaintances journal' where I'll have a page dedicated to new people I meet every year- the moments I shared with them, circumstances in which we met and how meeting them made me feel. (And a small picture of them to recall them)
Train trips just calm me down. Sit by, read a book, peek outside for farms and landscape, see different towns pass by, walk around in the train. Flights just make me all stifled up (of course necessary for long distance)
There is so much suffering around:
A friend is going through a messy divorce with fake FIR filed, the rickshaw guy I talked to made not enough in the day eat a meal, a close friend lost his only parent yesterday.
Everyone is fighting their own battles & ours is not the biggest
It shouldn't be up to the NT coach to keep asking everyone (AIFF, Isl clubs) for preparatory time for NT. Ridiculous that AIFF can't prioritize this and adjust some windows
On my aim to try to explore all the coffee shops in my small neighbourhood (there are perhaps 80+ in 2sq km) I came across a full vegan cafe and it's delightful. Probably going to be my weekend hangout cafe now
@ashwrya7
Indeed accessibility aspect was so glaring.Also that she perhaps was so hesitant to ask her near ones that she made an effort in a language she was not comfortable in with a stranger in a cafe.We need to way more mindful and caring of helping out those may not be as adept at tech
Annual winter migration from Europe to India for 3-4 months is sort of ideal for me currently. It is supposed to snow in Berlin today, sunset at 4pm. I love winters but not limited sunlight
I am lounging in a locality park in mild winter warmth (& attempting to learn German 😅)
Absolutely incredible how Odisha admin is supporting sports from hockey to football and making it a hub of sporting culture and facilities in India. An interesting marketing pillar being used by the state with actual investment behind it. Wish more states follow them
@GabbbarSingh
What it does is that makes you determined not to spend any extra time at work if company is so determined to punish you for coming in after a certain time
Since no orthopaedic or mri appointments available here for more than a month (note to folks who feel everything is great in healthcare outside India), decided to live test the knee & it held up fine. Injury break reaffirmed what I knew: how essential is sports to my wellbeing
Rummaging through documents, found this letter I got in 2016 which could have changed my life trajectory in a non-trivial manner. I generally avoid any possessions or keeping even items of sentimental value but this probably meant so much to me that I have kept it till now.
i don’t know how to explain this but i don’t think i can ever watch a movie alone in a theatre. a lot of my friends can but for me, it’s probably the saddest and loneliest experience.
My heart gladdens when I see people in old age just meeting up their friends and spending afternoons sitting outside and chatting about random happenings of the world
Short Sunday note to self:
1. Live in the present. Past regrets and future worries are pointless
2. Grateful for what I have now. There will be worse times than this for sure. Prepare self for सम भाव in those times
3. Always believe something magical/positive is about to happen
A few years out of b school, with couple of years of taste of corporate drudgery, many of us used to say 'One day, I'll just open a cafe'. None of us ever did till now when a dear friend opened a cafe in Bangalore. Absolutely amazing european desserts, khachapuri and pizzas
A day off on a weekday is so different from a weekend. Walking in the town with people going about their day work, empty cafes, kids coming back from school. Moments of the city not visible on a weekend
Maintaining a thin layer of detachment in everything we are pursuing or are deeply invested in - relationship, career, city, people is something that helps preserve yourself a little bit as a shock absorber if/when it doesn't go as expected
What a pleasure to meet
@Niharika__rao
, chatting & strolling, serependitiously finding lovely coffee spots. Heartfelt beautiful conversations
And
@desperooxyz
, a man of many interests, curiosities, exploration. So many aspects I find commonalities with.
All thanks to twitter 💜
It absolutely is. People love european summers, so do I. But something about crisp chill in the autumn air, not cold enough to dread long walks, hues of yellow and orange all around, enough day length before the darkness engulfs us with 4pm sunsets. Autumn is ❤️
Visiting tier 3 town after long. Almost no one has airs of wealth, people still sit in verandah soaking sun and chatting across the low boundary walls with neighbours, streets you can cycle without risk of mowed down, surprisingly great sporting facilities. Simple, happy life
As another year begins, may it bring shedding of unfounded fears, letting go of borrowed ambitions, more out of comfort zone experiences, further exploration of conscious self, listening to whispers of the body, meeting like minded folks and mindful of living in the present.
@jon_selvaraj
Absolutely stunning. When I thought his legs may not hold up, what beautiful defence and anticipation. Beaten axelsen in this form is just tremendous feat
Highlight of my 4 year Mumbai stay was weekend football group: a stellar set of people, which gave me the sense of community I needed while there.
Been 5 years, I moved out, but every year I fly down to Mumbai for a weekend, just to play a game with them again. It's that weekend
Picked up a new activity. It's almost childlike - excitement of learning something new from scratch, ambition to get better at it and the sense of achievement with reaching every milestone.
Been working on some agility and sprint work. Today, was able to chase down 24 years olds on the wings while playing football. At 36 years old, this felt nice.
Some diet cleanup and plyometrics and I can keep competing with college kids for few more years
70% of my work colleagues are from Armenia. Getting a glimpse into their lives and the abandonment of the country by all powers in face of existential that from Azerbaijan, turkey, Pakistan nexus is heartbreaking to see
"And, the critics ask, for what?
What did turning our back against the Russian Bear bring us?
Did the West come to our aid when the Turks and Azerbaijanis attacked?"

@SohrabAhmari
See this happening a lot more in younger generation.
Last week, met a 23 year old taking a year break- did base camp trek, travelled across Himachal, read a lot of books, was currently volunteering and learning surfing in Karnataka for 2 months.
An interesting thing I learned this year is that there are 2 Bharatas who may have given their name to India.
The 1st & most likely actual name-giver is the son of Rishabh in the line of the Ikshvaku dynasty. Rishabh’s father, Nabhi, is said to have first given his name to

Coming from PETA is hypocritical, but don't get how easily we ignore the brutalities of even a small dairy farm: multiple forceful impregnation of cow, devoiding calves to from mothers milk, sending new born male calves to butchers, releasing cow on streets post her fertile life
Saw this brother and sister from a very meagre economic background just spend their time playing, without any screens, and deriving so much joy out of it. Somewhere screens and over ambitiousness of parents have made childhoods of city kids devoid of room for playful spontaneity
5/n.

Another clip from the same movie.. Ajay Devgn at 0:30 >>... the intensity in his eyes 🔥🔥 Ajay got the ‘National Award Best Actor award’ for this classy act. 🚩
Learn surfing for 2 months, teach kids football + maths in village for 4 months, learn mud house making techniques for 2 months, work on a permaculture farm for 2 months, live in monastery/monk like routine for 2 months
Happy Diwali !! 🪔
The festival which inherently makes me happy, even though I am far away from all festivities 😊
(Swollen lip owing to an elbow in the face during football 😅)
One holding back of intuitive action on entering back in Germany after a stay in India is that you can't just stream content on mobile data with as carefree approach as in India. I have one of the cheapest plans and costs 15 euros monthly for 4gb. (Though France was way cheaper)
Lesson for self: Do not buy in advance, chocolates meant for nephews while going back to India as you might eat up half of it. Only buy on the last day of going back
Spent 4 hours randomly walking in Delhi on this cold day and felt like
@thedelhiwalla
, albeit without his abilities to capture surreal in the ordinary
Absolutely stunning writing and acting by Ambrish Verma in 'sapne vs everyone' by tvf.
Also got to know he was at the same b school as me a few years later.
So glad to have spent a bit more than half a decade working in a core manufacturing company, being on shop floor as well as in sales field once a month, before moving to app based business.
Learnt so much about human connections, humility, ingenuity and simplicity of people
Some stereotypes are true- often at work & in sports I found Germans to be extremely direct. What I would have probably shied at saying to a team or tried to put delicately, they would just say it straight up and it took me a while to be used to it but ultimately it is refreshing
Of all Indian cities I have been in, Delhi has the best sports infrastructure. Best part is most of them are pay per play entry without the need of membership
With less than a month left in my India stay, getting close to that time of the year when I think- Tell me again why do I have to go back to Germany ? 😓
But this has already been such a wonderful trip and I still have few weeks to make the most of spring 🌼
Sometimes I still can't get over the marvel of long haul flights. Few hours of sitting/sleeping and suddenly you are in such a different world (country) that it feels totally like magic to the kid in me
6th Dalai Lama, fell in love but he was supposed to be celibate. So the girl was sent away to Lithang, far from Lhasa. He died after capture by Mongols (some say killed) at 23.
Heartbroken, he wrote:
White Crane, lend me your wings
I do not go far
To Lithang
And then back
A mild summer day, lush green park & old couple talking about mundane aspects of life, their dog ambling along. Sometimes, watching ordinary moments of everyday lives makes me happy. A reminder, that don't need to aim for something extraordinary. Simple things can be gratifying
Was reading that in Jainism अभयदान is considered greatest of all daan, which essentially is doing/donating/helping to make someone free or relieve someone of fear
Keeping this as the base intention layer of any help/donation does seem to cover other intentions too
We are so tuned to derive respect for people only by their profession/work
/money.
It takes a bit more effort to assess their values and then evaluate if they are worthy of respect irrespective of their professional situation.
Came across
@IndicBookClub
. Exactly what I have been looking for to find some books pertaining to civilizational knowledge. Though still couldn't find a good book chronicling growth of cholas through south east asia
A strain of swine flu spreading among Chinese pigs has jumped to humans — and it “possesses all of the essential hallmarks of a candidate pandemic virus,” according to researchers.

An Indian colleague is married to an Armenian. He corresponded for a couple of years, fell in love and then one day after such long faceless interaction, decided to pack and travel to Armenia. Faced resistance from the girl's family but they just got married & he never came back
Did you have ‘pen friends’ ? I remember during our school days used to write letters to unknown people to make friends and know about their culture. Social health is so important for your overall well-being and social media today is digitised version of having ‘pen friends’.

Seeing 60-70 year olds in a coffee shop reading books along with youngsters in their 20s chipping away on their laptops makes me feel how we have somehow pseudo designated certain places only for certain archetype, even if unintentionally.
Don't like to work at home desk on weekend as coming to cafes is a change of environment to just to see people engrossed in such different activities over coffee- deep conversations, studying, reading a novel or sketching.
Spent 2 hours alone with a 4 year old. Thought I would run out of patience in 30 minutes but interestingly was fun immersing in their world of imaginations and wonders as well as playing along in their attempt to get me to do/buy stuff for them.
