This is a shameful attack on those unable to work & full of lies. The idea that "you go to the GP & say you are feeling a little bit depressed" & get PIP is laughable. Mental health stigma promoted by this government 😠 https://t.co/rfwCUp97Ym

Blaming people for the failure of a system meant to support them is unhelpful. We urge the government to rethink its approach to this issue.

People need tailored support from mental health professionals to help them return to work. Not face threats of losing what little money they currently have to live on.

When people seek help, they’re put on long waiting lists. And their mental health gets worse while they wait for help.

Rishi Sunak today announced plans to review the fit note system for people who aren’t well enough to work, with a focus on mental health. His speech continues a trend in recent rhetoric that is stigmatising, harmful, and inaccurate.

Not least because PhD UKRI students are only entitled to 13 weeks sick pay - less than 1/2 of the 28 weeks statutory sick pay that employees get. PhD students are told to treat their PhD like a job yet the rights we have fall well below those of employed workers. 2/4

Today I received an email from my Uni about Stress Awareness Month with 'free resources for managing stress'. A thread 🧵 Having been signed off sick for many months now, I can say that my university have unfortunately been the cause of much stress. 1/4

I wrote this advice as part of a BMJ article. They are words I needed to hear many times in my career. I’m so pleased they are striking a chord.Thank you for the tweet @Philippa_Perry
“Remember that you are replaceable in your job. You are not replaceable as a wife, husband, father, mother, daughter, son, or friend. Put on your own oxygen mask first and give yourself and your colleagues permission to take the time you deserve to recover.” From article in BMJ

Guilt at needing time off sick- it’s time to ditch the guilt. How many of us don’t take the time we need or are consumed with guilt if we do? #nhs #staffwellbeing
"Looking back at the end of a long career, will you regret taking that time off? Unlikely. Will you regret not taking that time off you needed? That’s more likely." @DrHelenGarr and other experts share how to stop feeling guilty over being off work sick https://t.co/J2kNnxo3ow

Imagine a world where we said, what’s going on with the children? So many of them are angry and distressed after school. So many of them are shut in their bedrooms. So many of them are anxious and unhappy. So many of them disillusioned at 15. 1;

So PhD students remain £775 a year short of national minimum wage and £1,200 short of a living wage. Increasingly difficult to see how they can afford accommodation, food and fuel, especially in the light of the cost-of-living crisis.

❗️Another week, another PhD student has come to my office in tears as they can’t afford to live in London on £18k. And this is before the price cap increase. @UKRI_News this time - can I ask what you are doing to support the next-generation so there is a next-generation?! Pls RT
