This is a really interesting point though. Why did the senior devs feel like they were faster when they were not?.
You can explain away very experienced devs not getting an uplift on large complex codebases as unsurprising. But those devs getting significantly *slower*, while thinking they were getting faster, when AI tools were optional?. That's quite a result.

Maybe I spoke too fast.
@amasad I'm interested in knowing why the 'first principles thinker Grok' is instantly searching what Musk thinks about the issue. Is it's first principle what Musk thinks must be correct?

Simon's comment, screenshotted, is probably more on point. There is a learning curve, and the study is of course low 'n'. So we should look at broad conclusions in askance.
@krishnanrohit @simonw has an exchange with the authors over at HN. tldr: it's hard and complex.

Fascinating study. I don't think I believe the implications of the study, but it's good work.
We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers. The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.
