Are we too cortex exclusive? 🧠. We found that perceptual decisions depend on a cortical pathway through thalamus (transthalamic), even though corticocortical projections are intact. Transthalamic pathways thus play a major but underappreciated role in perception. 1/5

Big thanks to Claire McKinnon and Murray Sherman for seeing this through. This work was a collaboration between the @TheFlorey Institute and the University of Chicago. #cortex #transthalamic #thalamus #calciumimaging #neuroscience #optogenetics #perception #decisionmaking.

Transthalamic pathways are strong 'driver' projections, well-positioned to integrate top-down and bottom-up inputs for higher order cortex. These results build on excellent work which compared PT vs IT cortical cells @anne_churchland @simonMusall @mattlark @na0ya_takahashi.5/5.
