Japanese prime minister will not seek reelection following criticism over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced on Friday that he would not run in the governing Liberal Democratic Party's September 29 presidential election paving the way for a new prime minister. The move comes as Suga, who assumed office last year, faced criticism and decreasing support ratings over the country's COVID-19 management and hosting of the Olympics despite public health concerns.
