“It is a narrow mind which cannot look at a subject from various points of view.” George Eliot. Writer, Editor, Primary School Librarian
London, England
Joined September 2012
I wrote an essay, partly inspired by @JonHaidt and from yrs of reading Teresa Cremin and Maryanne Wolf. Titled ‘Is the demise in reading for pleasure terminal?’ Ironically, it’s a long read and online. It’s relevant if you have kids or teach kids.

A student came to me the other day about FASE reading. She stated the prospect of being called on to read at random was making her anxious. I thanked her for sharing this with me. Did I allow her to opt out as a result? Absolutely not. I let her pick a sentence in the reading. 🧵

On a serious note. There is an answer. * If the government releases age-standardised scores, where the raw score is adjusted based on the student's exact age in months and days, the birth month effect on the reported score will be significantly mitigated. * If the government

“I asked a simple question at a pro-Palestine protest and it turned ugly” @matthewsyed in The Times

Police arrested 493 people at the pro-Palestine protests in Trafalgar Square, where I encountered abuse, swearing, ignorance and virulent, unthinking antisemitism

Most non Jews don’t know how securitised Jewish spaces now are. Guards (often armed), metal detectors, security doors. I’ve spoken at mosques & churches: No other faith has this, is targeted as frequently, nor is subject to as much/any whataboutism when threatened or scared.

It appears that celebratory parades are happening in cities in the UK, just as they did straight after October 7. It was London and Brighton tonight (that I know of), with more planned for the weekend.
Jews were murdered in Manchester today and tonight in my city the local pro-Pals went ahead with a plan to shut down the train station. A brave soul shouted “Free the hostages” and they BOOED him. This dehumanisation is what gets Jews killed. I felt really scared in there.

It is sickening that this is some people’s response to British Jews being murdered as they left their synagogue on the holiest day of the year
Liverpool Street right now, it’s grim to be a Jew in the UK. I’m absolutely sick , the police is here doing nothing while people chant ‘from the river to the sea’ and glorifying violence. Prime Minister, you are responsible

We're sad to that Brian Patten has died, aged 79. His poetry had fun in abundance – daft puns, groan-making rhymes, kids getting one over adults - but there was more to Patten than the light-hearted: he explored the sensitive side of life too. #BfK obituary to follow.

It is “a skilled and difficult job”, massively undervalued, quite often ignored and almost always misunderstood.
@frankcottrell_b A school library needs a person who is experienced at helping children, of all the school ages, to find books they will enjoy. It is a skilled and difficult job, but so worthwhile Public libraries need the same, but it is rare for our current 'librarian training' to provide it
