My 'Framework for the Fair Pricing of Medicines' has just been published as a Leading Article by Pharmacoeconomics. This framework proposes a number of advancements to existing approaches for specifying a 'cost-effectiveness threshold' for new medicines.

I agree. List prices in other countries do not reflect the value that drugs provide to Canadian patients, and it is inexplicable that Canadian drug price regulation will remain limited to this outdated consideration. Canada has the means and expertise to do better. @PMPRB_CEPMB.

Establishing reasonable prices for new oncology drugs is an extremely difficult task, one that requires input from stakeholders with a broad range of expertise. Publishing arrogant and ill-informed editorials that disparage an entire discipline does nothing to advance this. [4/4].

Nor is it acknowledged that recent international empirical estimates of the health opportunity cost associated with marginal public health care spending are nowhere close to CAD$250,000 per QALY, and instead are much closer to CADTH's current CAD$50,000 per QALY threshold. [3/4].

In all seriousness, this is a remarkably poor article that does a disservice to readers of @CurrentOncology. Nowhere is it acknowledged that high prices for drugs can harm the health of Canadians - including cancer patients - given constrained public health care resources. [2/4].

I still cherish the magic wand I received when I graduated as a health economist. But magic can be dangerous. In this case, a careless magician has caused all qualified peer reviewers to disappear, and the credibility of the journal to vanish. [1/4]
