Congratulations to our three undergraduate researchers that graduated with Honor in Biology. Emerson & Reese are off to graduate school, while Gray goes into the real world.

There will also be a Gordon Research Seminar (GRS), co-chaired by Tegan Horan (@tegania) and Ian Wolff (@IDWolff). The GRS is designed for graduate students, postdocs, and anyone new to the meiosis field. It will be held Jun 1-2, 2024.

Wonderful @UNC_Biology graduation ceremony yesterday. Students that received awards were asked to name their science hero. We had Darwin, McClintock, Sekelsky, Newton…what? How did Newton get on that list???.

Had a great visit with #meiosis labs @MaxPerutzLabs at Univ. Vienna (Joao Matos, Peter Schlögelhofer @the_PS_lab, Verena Jantsch, Franz Klein) and others. Then a gorgeous train trip to Zürich for an awesome visit to @ETH_en Inst of Biochemistry thanks to Madhav Jagannathan.

Another highlight was that, although UNC bball failed, UNC science rocked! Fantastic talks by Evan Dewey from my lab, @stutzman_alexis from @DMcKay_Lab & @JdowenL labs, and @JamesKempJrPhD and @markus_nevil from @DuronioLab, plus many great posters!.

Seeing people that came thru my lab now training their own people is more rewarding than any publications or other lab product (tho those are fun). Also nice to bring @MOHAMED3NASR & @Pri_SRosa to their 1st Fly Meeting (and @ca_turcotte & @NPazhayam to their 2nd). 4/5.

. there were several former members of my lab there with their own labs, like @nicolecrown2, @EricStoffregen, @BergstralhLab, Jan LaRocque. @mcveylab couldn't make it, but his former postdoc and grad student (my F2s) @EBolterstein and Dan Kane were there. 3/5.

The Fly Meeting has for me always been a key social event, seeing friends and mentors from grad school and postdoc days. There was typically not much repair/recombination at Dros. This one, however, had much more. This was in part because. 2/5.

Home from #Dros23. my ~30th Fly Meeting and probably the best ever! Really enjoyed plenary talks by junior and mid-career faculty, especially the comments each made addressing the Pay It Forward theme. Both the science and the personal stories were inspiring. 1/5.

I presume it happened during the carotene stage of meiosis….

Amy Shaub Maddox @AmyShaubMaddox had to leave faculty mtg early. As she passed me handed me carrots. I was puzzled but she said I’d understand…they’re CROSSOVER CARROTS!
