I’ve sold 1.3 million kids books & counting by being a little outside of genre expectations. An inarticulate, working-class, boy MC in YA & things like that. You can stand out that way, but it makes subs much harder. Feeling that all over again rn. I’ll be better tomorrow.

I am def. making things harder on myself (& my valiant agent) by writing a cozy mystery with a middle-aged male MC. Kind of a loser. No romance. Genre expectations aren’t nec. stronger in traditional publishing, but they come outside the door. It’s just the story I need to write.
