Build a good business. With good core operations. Profitability and execution at the heart of it. And then scale. Don't scale first and hope you can get there.

At some point a Board needs to decide to make the long ROI play when they realize a business isn't one of network effects or increasing returns.

It was also clear that if the bookkeeping operation couldn't be automated with AI and software, it didn't offer great economics.

Having gotten to know Bench a little before the Series B, I always found the founding team's vision to be compelling about where the market was moving.

The dichotomy between reality and founder story at Bench is one of governance. The valley culture of growth at all costs works for the outlier successes (and it pays off). But a board has to know when to change course.
