There are lots of problems with our railway, but asking the state to run it is likely to make them worse.
Hard to imagine a Labour government taking on the rail unions and their inefficient practices. And hard for rail to compete vs health, defence, police etc for investment.

The harm that Matthew Parris’s article has done to this noblest of causes in a single day is immense. It must not be allowed to obscure the real issues at stake and the nuanced arguments they require.
I feel so conflicted about assisted dying.
I’m one of a minority who voted in favour of the last Bill before the Commons.
In the last six months I’ve watched two people I loved die slowly and painfully, wishing it could end sooner.
Matthew Parris’ argument is chilling.
