1/11 Hi! I’m Matt Webb in Orlando, FL. I’ve been enjoying #SMBtwitter and #retwit from the shadows for about 18 months and have learned so much! I will be at @SMB_ash looking to meet everyone in person. I look forward to participating more in the future. A bit about me…

Or is there something else related that would be interesting or is missing from the SMB twitter world?

- our experience growing an appliance repair co from $0 to ~150k/mo revenue - the generations of team members as the appliance repair co company grew - how my understanding of what “investing” in a business means has changed in the past 10 years

Acquiring a service business is more expensive but has (hopefully!) already paid in the $$$ and time required to find a great team. If you’re building a service business from 0 then know you are creating real value (“goodwill”) when you hire/fire/optimize your team.

I underestimated: - how long it would take to build a great team - $$$ spent finding the team. Hiring/firing to get a great team. Much of this is not direct expense. It’s opportunity cost, training, slow ramp to efficiency - the leverage a great team creates

Starting, running, and scaling a home service business is 1st and foremost about the team you build. However long you think it will take to build a great team - x4 it. I expected 6 months but reality has looked more like 2 years.

I wrote a 60-page guide with step-by-step instructions to launch Google Ads for Local service businesses. It's the EXACT same steps I follow to launch accounts for my clients. Want it? I'll dm it to you if you: 1. Follow Me 2. Retweet this 3. Comment "PPC"

Great summary of the “just get started” mindset.
Last weekend's @SMB_ash was a blast. Here are my top 5 takeaways and the 🔑 to overcoming fear of failure.

Ex. If you have a home service biz and you’re not large enough for a GM you might lose your best person if you cannot promote them. Instead, grow the business (quickly) organically to that size or grow revenue by acquisition to hit the next scale level.

So, we all need to “enjoy the process of growth/build/buy” as @MikeBotkin_ said at lunch because we are building high growth machines that are going to remain on that path or require a culture shift at the “goal size”.

An object in motion tends to stay in motion… if the HoldCo culture has been setup as fast-paced, high-growth then you attract people that like that. The org now had momentum and it’s likely going to be hard to slow it down.

Had a great lunch with @MikeBotkin_ @airpez @tylerpetresky yesterday. This jumped out at me… if you are building a HoldCo and you hire great people, those people need a way to advance. To have a place for them to move up into, the HoldCo must grow.

A fantastic first communication from the new Peloton CEO. He’s bringing reality to a company where financial results did not matter and laying out the path ahead.
