🚨🚨New paper and first PhD chapter🚨🚨 Rapid seagrass meadow expansion in an Indian Ocean bright spot We show that Maldivian seagrass habitat has expanded 3-fold in area over the last two decades and the habitat is associated with inhabited islands! https://t.co/GsmSx3rexI 1/6

Check out this new research! 🌱 Seagrass globally is declining rapidly, but the Maldives stands out as a rare global seagrass ‘bright spot’. https://t.co/2ynWEQLHE6

Disappointing take from @UKLabour
As the weather gets warmer the lack of grass cutting is becoming a problem for our residents. When running for office the @CroydonTories made it a centre point of their campaign. Now in power, they are failing. @Ellily2 & @RowennaDavis are fighting to get things done for Waddon.

I wrote a piece in The Conversation to discuss some of the results from our recent paper! Seagrass meadows are rapidly expanding near inhabited islands in Maldives – here’s why https://t.co/xuqNhBJkg7 via @ConversationUK

While humanity often has a negative impact, people may inadvertently play a pivotal role in this Maldivian seagrass success story.

Our results may reflect that seagrass expansion is a product of a level of anthropogenic influence that has so far been beneficial- but we highlight that tipping over nutrient thresholds could lead to habitat declines. 5/6

Interestingly, our spatial analysis of habitat distribution also shows that seagrass is more likely to grow next to inhabited island vs uninhabited ones. We discuss that this could be linked to anthropogenic nutrient inputs and/ or altered sediment dynamics! 4/6

We also produce modern seagrass extent maps for the #Maldives that show 105 square kilometers of habitat! These data can be used to protect these beautiful habitats and contribute to ecosystem accounts! 3/6

Using the @NASA_Landsat data archive in #GEE, we produced a time series over two decades that tracks how Maldivian seagrass area has expanded - a trend that is in contrast to declines globally. 2/6

The saddest part of my job is seeing the ecosystem I love and live to protect dying in front of my eyes… The fourth global coral bleaching event has been confirmed. https://t.co/vWbUYEySHL
