Many science fiction writers of the 1970s grossly overestimated progress in many domains for the year 2000. I think writers of the 2020s will be mostly wrong too but in the other direction for fiction set in 2050.

It looks like this year’s harvest will be catastrophic. That should be a worry for anyone who eats food. If a disaster on this scale had befallen any other industry, there would be a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth.

It is extraordinary that Britain has achieved this despite:. Cripplingly high energy costs.Strangling regulation.Flat productivity.Highest tax burden in 70 years. Imagine what the Britain of 2050 could be doing if we start being run competently. Stay optimistic!
