Our resolve to prevent suicides for people enduring psychological suffering as seen elsewhere in the world. A full impact assessment is needed and amendments to ensure AD is a last resort when all other care options have been explored and offered.

I have watched loved ones die in pain. And parliament has spoken on #AssistedDyingBill and most in the U.K. agree. I still worry for the potential to exploit marginalised and vulnerable people. This bill must do more to protect safeguards. And it must not dilute.

5. In other countries, euthanasia has broadened. Canada, Netherlands and Belgium allow assisted dying for mental illness arguing it would be discriminatory not to relieve suffering here too. We should hold a clear line instead and offer support in our darkest moments.

4. We haven’t prioritised ensuring dignity (and love) in death. Social care is in crisis and our palliative care sector is almost bankrupt. The government’s pays for 30% of current provision, leaving huge inequality in care. That is a precarious context to introduce AD.

3. Working in mental health, I know it doesn’t take much for us to feel ashamed, inadequate or diminish our own value. The scope for internalised pressure to relieve the burden on others will be a factor for many and very hard to detect.

haven’t learnt lessons from repeated scandals from the Post Office, Harrods, NHS or the CofE. Time and again, abuse is covered up and powerful organisations move to protect themselves, instead of victims. It’s a serious step to open this risk to a vulnerable group.

My personal view on the #AssistedDying debate. After much thought, I’d vote against the bill 1. for the first time, it gives legal authority for an individual to end another person’s life, a fundamental shift in power with no guaranteed fail safes. I worry we 🧵.
