With an old non-OCRed paper, the result was equally promissing.

First, I tried with a digitally-born PDF. It was able to summarize the paper and to reply very specifically tailored questions regarding that paper within the conceptual framework of taxonomy. Apparently, it somehow understood synonomy (although these are not synonyms).

So I was testing @damengchen's with scientific papers (taxonomy of lacebugs) and it blew my mind what LLMs can already do but more importantly, their perspective for taxonomic data mining from these pdf prisons. 🧵.

I bumped into this and I can tell that I'm helping the 'brain drain' in Brazil. I haven't left the country, but academia. I had to in order to pay my bills. Still a scientist in my heart - a heavily trained one, internationally acknowledge by my peers.

So, 5 years ago I helped @cklistjournal become part of @Pensoft remarkable portfolio of biodiversity journals, and one of the things I asked Lyubomir was the application for a WoS Impact Factor - and now it's finally here. Couldn't be more proud.

So @NASA is backing up open science via NASA TOPS which wants to promote coding resources and how to use @ZENODO_ORG to assign DOIs to what people'll produce. Is there any biodiversity-related open science community already? Wouldn't that be awesome?.

- failed peer-reviewed system.- misleading metrics on researcher assessment.- voices heard because of reputation and not quality of ideas.- lack of decent opportunities and competitiveness against other fields. etc, etc.

A reminder that we should remain questioning everything, including published science.

Sometimes we don't let our creations go, forcing it to still orbit our own old ideas and influence, limiting its reach and natural evolution. Sometimes we simply have to let it go and focus on the next thing, or we might be condemning the very creation that we care so deeply.

Is this really going to happen? . I've been waiting for years. .

Happy to see that finally happening, and proud to have been part of the proposal. Taxonomic treatments (and liteture) and a core, center piece of the biodiversity knowledge graph. This is 1 more step towards recognition and acceptance. Kudos, @plazi_ch, @myrmoteras & @andrawaag.
