It was an honor to be at
@StPatsNYC
last Wednesday for the Memorial Mass for Vin Scully, share the experience with
@FordhamNYC
family and friends, and describe the joy of the connections he made through so many years.
One of the biggest losses in athletic administration is the respected SID who could evaluate a situation, anticipate the potential consequences, privately advise a power coach that he’s making the wrong move and help the institution avoid an embarrassing mistake.
This opinion will go over like a lead balloon, but this is an outcome of university presidents, coaches and athletic staff viewing SID/media relations staff as GOFERS and stat jockeys, NOT STRATEGIC positions.
They take advantage of timid people and yes-men.
One of the fun classes of the year: The annual history of
@marchmadness
, squeezing 40 years of personal observations into one class. This will be the 81st tournament and it will be my 41st. You’re not going to get that many observations in very many classrooms.
My students will tell you that I am not speechless very often, but this is one of those moments. My sense of gratitude is difficult to describe. I’m thankful for all the people whose trust made many of those stories possible.
Shrimp cocktail from
@stelmo
is being served in the press box at halftime. And some unsuspecting scribe is about to discover the joy of writing running copy while a hole is being burned right through the top of his or her head.
Jim O’Connell’s acts of kindness numbered in the thousands. It made no difference whether the recipient was an influential person or a freshman volunteering in a SID office. We all share our grief with Annie, James and Andrew — and the relief that there’s no more pain.
When
@UNC_Basketball
lost in the second round of the 1994
@MarchMadnessMBB
tournament, a crushing defeat for a defending champion, Eric sought out beat reporters in the dressing room to thank them. I’ll never forget that grace and dignity. This is crushing.
I worked in the industry (including NYT) for >30 years and have taught and mentored J students for 14. If you had filed a story making such a baseless claim, any responsible editor would have sent it back with instructions to try again.
The class divide has never been so apparent in media. Many journalists grew up rich, went to $20k a year prep schools, are obsessed with fights over vocabulary, symbols, fringe boogeymen -- ignore crumbling public schools, unsafe streets, rampant poverty as secondary concerns.
I have admired the work of Bob McKillop since I first saw him coach a basketball team more than 40 years ago. I have never admired him more than I do after reading about the life-altering lessons he is passing along to his students.
If you are a Sports Journalism student and you are looking for a mentor at a future
@CFBPlayoff
, here’s a scary stat. The Alabama-Clemson game will be the 58th meeting between No. 1 and No. 2 in college football history. This is my 35th.
Whenever I think of the best times, the historic events, the memorable meals, the laugh-filled trips and the kindest gestures of support, there is one thread that joins them. Dave was the reason those experiences were so special.
Many thanks to
@TheFWAA
for this very surprising and unnecessary recognition. Proud to announce the Best Writing Contest winners as examples of best practices for sports journalism students everywhere. The Rams logo was a nice touch.
The people responsible for this will soon realize — much too late — that Notre Dame has forfeited the good will, professionalism and dignity that John provided for more than four decades. You could always rely on his perspective. There’s no price you can put on that.
Today's bad news: Notre Dame has apparently 'let go,' John Heisler--associate AD who has only been at school for FORTY ONE years! John is as good as it gets; should have been AD and now the heinous Jack Swarbrick is apparently trying to save a few bucks by dumping him. Ludicrous.
When I arrived in the press room, covering with Bill Wallace, a NYT editor apologetically said there was no room for my sidebar in the Monday paper and I should plan on writing for Tuesday unless something crazy happened. Later I called and said, “Is this crazy enough for you?”
On Feb. 13, 1994, John Calipari and John Chaney nearly came to blows in the Mullins Center media room after another UMass-Temple classic. An oral history of one of college basketball's most infamous blowups, 25 years later:
Pregame press box conversation: I asked, “This is the 62nd game between teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2. Guess how many I have attended.”
“20?”
“Higher.”
“30?”
“Higher.”
The answer: Tonight is the 37th.
I was very young when I started.

This is the most impressive display of the night. Congrats to Doughty and Bruce Pearl for taking the high road, just as Seton Hall’s P.J. Carlesimo did after the foul call at the end of OT in the ‘89 championship game loss to Michigan.
Auburn’s Samir Doughty was the epitome of grace in the locker room. Cooperative, answered all Qs.
“They’re gonna do their job the best they can. The referees don’t try to tell me how to put a basketball in the hole, so I’m not gonna tell them how to make the right or wrong call”
I was just thinking how much Jeff Washburn would have chased the Brohm story and how he would have been amazed at its outcome when I realized he passed away a year ago today. The press room is not the same without him.
A Saint Peter’s pregame read: My postcard from the tournament on the party-crashing Peacocks, an industry built upon games, and my search for perspective.

I have no idea why it took me so long to realize this, but if we wind up with a UCLA-Houston final, the 14-year-old that remains within me is likely to implode.
As we prepared for this week and beyond, I told our students that NCAA tournament No. 42 is just as exciting for me as No. 1, because I can watch through their eyes. You won’t find better opportunities than the ones offered by

Please pay close attention to the thoughts of Ray Allen, whose curiosity and global awareness as a student at UConn in the 1990s were just as impressive as his athletic achievements.
High-profile coaching searches are the Demolition Derby of sports journalism. But the post-Saban Alabama coverage has the potential of being the equivalent of the Indianapolis 500: Right turns into a wall at 230 miles an hour.
A good thing to remember before you post.
I never, ever thought that the disconnect between the hazards of pro football and the entitlement of selfish fans would create a flashpoint in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The dignity and professionalism Eli Manning displayed will one day create the memory that this was one of his finest hours. The same cannot be said about the New York Football Giants.
My 1991 profile of Dawn Staley, a thoughtful, soft-spoken athlete whose ideas would lead to a career in coaching, a NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship at the University of South Carolina and a chance for a gold medal with

Aspiring sports journalists:
This is the 80th NCAA tournament.
It’s my 40th.
Who would you like to guide your Final Four coverage?
Of all the things I will always admire about Chris Dufresne, the one that stands out is that his family was a constant presence everywhere we went. There was always something new to share about Sheila, Drew, Danny and Joey. I hope they know how many of us are sharing their grief.
I was once asked during a radio interview if Fordham was the Syracuse of the south. I politely replied, “No, Syracuse is the Fordham of the north.” Vin Scully: Checkmate.
A pro tip inspired by two of the first three questions at the
@CFBPlayoff
press conference this morning: “…talk a little bit about,” apparently the latest variant of this disease, is every bit as embarrassing as the original “talk about.” There is no cure, but there is hope.
I can remember having a Sports Writing class cover
@marchmadness
while watching a screen in our classroom. This year,
@iupuijournalism
students are in the arena, Fieldhouse or Stadium. Where would you rather be? It’s Legalized Hooky — except you’re working.
I’d defer to your detail and add dots once connected by a wise veteran AD. The SID is an expert on changes in the ever-evolving media biz and knows local, regional and nat’l personnel. Their work consistently influences perception, which can determine the success of fundraising.
In light of some recent industry layoffs I saw it asked what does an SID (sports information director, communications, public relations, media relations director) do for a college athletic department. Well okay then, here is a list (surely it’s missing stuff)...
Honored to be the pool reporter at

National Championship tonight. When the late Dave Parry was National Coordinator of Officials, I looked forward to shaking his hand and saying, “It was a pleasure not doing business with you.”
Two years from right now, a football game — the
@CFBPlayoff
National Championship — will take place in this building in downtown Indianapolis. I. Cannot. Wait.
No matter how expected the phone call was 30 years ago this morning, the loss of Katha Quinn was crushing. She would be embarrassed, but very proud, to be linked to the great professionals that have received the USBWA award that was named for her.

Always accessible, always helpful, always with something to say, especially about the Fighting Irish. It was a guaranteed good day when the voicemail message would begin: “Malcolm.
“Hornung.”
He could have said, “You got a question?” “Talk a little bit” is a variation of the “talk about” syndrome that has been polluting press conferences for years.
Proud to announce that
@USBWA

@Catchin24

If his experience in Annapolis means anything to him, Bill will know the importance of deciding to decline. If not, his father, a cherished member of the Naval Academy community, will be spinning in his grave.
I remember counting how many times Jim Bouton’s hat would fly off. At the 20th anniversary of Ball Four, I had a chance to write about its influence. A while later, a copy arrived at the office, inscribed “Thank you for being so nice to me.” I’ll always treasure that.

I saw the Georgetown team John Thompson inherited. It was as far from a Final Four team as you could imagine. He did much more than elevate a program. He forever changed the sport’s perception of an entire region, and he did it without compromising his convictions.

When it appeared the whole world had descended upon State College, PA, Pedro’s visit to my students became a master class, equal parts hope, reality, gratitude, humility, knowledge and humor. He made a demanding business feel attainable. Those students will always have his gift.
I interviewed George Mikan 40 years ago and he described his fondness for Ray Meyer, his coach at DePaul, whose drills included one called the figure eight. Soon it would become known throughout the game as the Mikan Drill. He would be very pleased to see that it is in good hands
