Thanks to
@GMA
for having me. Words don't normally fail me, but I'm at a loss to describe how Max would react to seeing his photo on the big screen in Times Square.
Max would have been 25 today. Would love to see who he would be. That’s the shame of it. In his memory had his favorite meal today at lunch. Great job,
@PearlsDlxBurger
.
In seven years, the
@CFBPlayoff
has had 28 berths filled by 11 programs. That’s not healthy for the sport. That’s not good marketing. The sport continues to be popular in spite of the people who run it.
I came to work at ESPN 18 years ago today, on Nov. 5, 2002, as the first college football writer at . On the day that my employment became an adult, ESPN informed me that upon expiration of my contract on Jan. 31, I will no longer be working here. 1/
I am no expert on suicide. I am an expert on one suicide — my son’s. I am stunned at idea we should “honor and move on.” Their “move on” = “Don’t mention.” Doesn’t this contribute to stigma surrounding mental health, to shame society applies to suicide? Sunlight would help, no?
I love to write, and I love college football, and I don’t anticipate either one of those loves diminishing anytime soon. After Jan. 31, we’ll see what happens. 5/5
The reaction to my tweeting Thursday that ESPN is not renewing my contract has been gratifying. Thanks very much to my friends and colleagues. Thanks to those of you who know me only as a byline or a voice in their ear. If you were trying to make me feel good, you succeeded.
Tonight on
@Jeopardy
, the answer was, “
@AlabamaFTBL
plays this
@SEC
archrival in the Iron Bowl.” No one knew the answer. 🤦🏻♂️ What’s happened to this country?
I am heartbroken that
@CecilHurt
has died. Cecil was a singular, compelling, trustworthy voice on all things
@AlabamaFTBL
. And pretty much everything else. And such a quick, dry wit. What a shame.
Here are the complete SEC schedules for 2018.
Alabama road games: Ole Miss, Ark, Tenn, LSU
Georgia road games: Missouri, LSU, Kentucky. (Florida neutral site)
Auburn opens with Washington & has Georgia and Alabama both on road
Got a minute? In today's My Story,
@ESPN
's daily series of 60-second vignettes for
@CFB150
,
@HawkeyeFootball
head coach Kirk Ferentz describes the emotional impact of the Kinnick Wave to the patients at the U of Iowa Children's Hospital. Bring a hanky.
The three independents who played full schedules —
@LibertyFootball
,
@BYUfootball
&
@ArmyWP_Football
— have gone a combined 30-4 (Army still has
@WVUfootball
in the Liberty Bowl). Even if the pandemic kept them from playing tougher schedules, that’s impressive.
Thank you, Lee. Thanks to
@CollegeGameDay
for giving me the platform from which to tell the Hilinski’s story — and mine. We all hope that our message is heard by those whom it may help.
I’ve been involved with
@CollegeGameDay
a long time. The piece that
@Ivan_Maisel
just told on the show is as courageous and powerful a story as ever told. Continuous prayers go out to the Maisel and Hilinski families. The National Suicide Prevention Line is 1-800-273-8255.
And...I’m back. Actually, I never left. Here’s a piece for
@ringer
on all the pitfalls that take down veteran colfb coaches and how the head coach of
@AlabamaFTBL
has stiff-armed them:
I don’t see myself retiring. I have more to write. But I want to write when I want to write, spend more time with my wife and daughters, and maybe even catch a college football game from the stands. I’ll be around.
I understand that teams wear different unis to attract recruits. But I keep flipping over to watch
#NEBvsOSU
and needing a second to recognize
@OhioStateFB
in black. If you’ve got a great traditional uni, why not wear it? Harrumph.
If
@CFBPlayoff
had 8-team field, what's the discussion this week? Penn St.'s chances? USC's? What would Clemson/Oklahoma play for? Seeding? Bama locked in despite losing? No thanks. I like that winning conference isn't enough to make 4-team field. Have to be better than that.
A bittersweet My Story in which the late Rod Bramblett, the beloved voice of
@AuburnFootball
, discusses his two most most famous calls: the Prayer at Jordan-Hare and Kick Six. (He liked one of them). He is missed.
One thing that should be emphasized again and again: in a sport where the best players stay three seasons, Smith, Harris, Jones and Leatherwood are fourth-year guys.
Goal: to be as clever as
@TCU
social media team. Billboard in PHX airport: “Horned Frogs Do Well in the Desert.” Underneath, in fine print: “Actually, we do well everywhere.” 👏👏👏
I say this as a devoted college football guy — there’s nothing like the Final Four. The NCAA can’t get out of its own way these days, yet the Final Four delivers.
As a journalist, after 42 years, the last 36 covering a sport that has enthralled me from my earliest memory, I am taking a step back. The editor in my head, the voice that I entrust to deliver the right nouns and verbs, is telling me it’s time.
I had two iconic sports figures in my childhood. Bear Bryant died on my birthday many years ago. But as long as fellow Mobilian
@HenryLouisAaron
lived, I remained connected to the boy who fell asleep listening to the Braves nightly on his analog clock radio. I am sad today.
The National Football Foundation interviewed me about mental health. Depression ended my son’s life. I hope, especially on
#WorldMentalHealthDay
, that someone who needs help will find the courage to ask for it.
“What we all want to do is remove the stigma from mental illness.”
For ESPN’s
@Ivan_Maisel
, the importance of recognizing and normalizing issues related to mental health is not just a job, it’s a mission.
#worldmentalhealthday
Very few journalists proved excellent in print as reporter/feature writer/columnist, then remade themselves on TV as feature reporter & essayist. Now there is one fewer at ESPN. Geno on Gameday made you laugh one week, reach for the Kleenex the next. Bravo to my old friend.
June 30 was my last day at ESPN. I'm indebted to every editor, producer, director, crew member, researcher, and colleague during that 25 1/2-year run. Grateful to all those who let us parachute into their lives and trust us with their stories. No Plan B yet. For now, just thanks.
Getting read to begin the
@afspnational
#overnightwalk
thru San Francisco for Max. Maybe we can prevent others from suffering this kind of loss. Spoke briefly with
@SollyThomas90
. He has done great work to raise awareness. Here we go.
Thanks for noticing! Max would have been 28 today. We will celebrate as we have the last six birthdays — we will eat something greasy and/or something sugary. His two favorite food groups.
Bobby Bowden won at least 10 games
@FSUFootball
every season from 1987-2000. I’d put Saban’s run ahead of Bowden’s (duh) but let’s not forget a remarkable run.
Former Bama QB Greg McElroy on Nick Saban's run of success: "This is probably the most consistent run that we’ve ever seen in college football history. To have won at least 10 games every year since 2008 is a feat that’s absolutely remarkable."
More HERE:
In today’s My Story
@TwentyER
gives a touching tribute to the impact that his
@CanesFootball
position coach, Chuck Pagano, had on a young Ed Reed. It started with laundry.
If you live in the Bay Area, or you'd like to commute there this winter, I'll be teaching a Continuing Studies course at
@Stanford
: A History of College Football: 150 Years. Registration is open. Check it out at .
I can’t think of a journalist who knew the history of, and understood his readers’ passion for, a beat the way that Lou knew and understood
@NDFootball
. He has been a go-to source for me for 30-plus years. May his memory be for a blessing.
We are heartbroken to report that Lou Somogyi passed away yesterday morning at the age of 58. He posted an article just before 9:00 a.m. and went to play tennis. He died of an apparent heart attack after finishing up.
Your moment of
@AlabamaFTBL
Zen: Bear Bryant lived 69 years, 137 days. Nick Saban reaches 69-138 on March 18, the day before the 2021 Tide expects to stage its first spring practice.
Class is in session as Ivan Maisel, Stanford grad and Senior Writer for ESPN, presides over our class this quarter: The History of College Football!
Next week, we talk TV and
@FlemmingDave
will be here. Look forward to hearing from and catching up with my friend/KZSU partner!
I feel good about my role in that. I feel good about the stories I have told via writing and on video, on the college football podcast that I helped establish, and especially, my role in creating and producing the editorial, podcast and video content for College Football 150. 3/
In 1955,
@HawkeyeFootball
led
@NDFootball
14-7, 4th quarter. QB Paul Hornung returned kickoff 23 yards, threw 17-yard TD pass, kicked the tying XP, kicked off, tackled returner at the Iowa 2. After defense made stop, Hornung led drive downfield, won the game with a 28-yard FG.
What's the Indiana basketball equivalent of college football today? Champion that can't find it and is nowhere near it currently and hasn't been since being it?
Colorado? Except a couple years under Petersen, Washington? Nebraska?
I hope you will consider pre-ordering I Keep Trying to Catch His Eye, my book about our late son Max, and how I learned to carry on while carrying my grief. Publishers think pre-orders are important. You'll get the book Oct. 26. Here's a link:
In today’s My Story,
@DustyDvoracek
describes the thrill of a recruiting visit to a big game, from the
@OU_Football
crowd storming the field to getting a postgame scholarship offer from
@CoachBobStoops
. It’s great to hear someone be a teenager again.
An excerpt of my book, I Keep Trying to Catch His Eye, appears in the new
@stanfordmag
. The excerpt discusses why my family has been public about my son Max’s suicide. You may preorder the book (publication date Oct. 26) wherever you buy books.
In this My Story, which ran last month,
@AschoffESPN
describes his role in a critical
@GatorsFB
victory in the run to the 2006 BCS title. A great snapshot of his personality — and what we’ve lost.
Hey
@CFBHeather
, I know the
@CFBPlayoff
committee has new members every year but do you think
@NDFootball
performance will shift thinking in what a “best team” is?
The
@NDFootball
back Johnny Lujack lived so long few recall how big a star the 1947 Heisman winner was. He won AP Male Athlete of the Year over AL MVP Joe DiMaggio, Rookie of the Year Jackie Robinson, Wimbledon/U.S. Open champ Jack Kramer. Made the cover of Life. RIP to a legend.
In 36 years, I have worked at four newspapers, Sports Illustrated (twice), and
@espn
. John Skipper is far and away the best CEO I have had. He cares about the product and he cares about the people who create it.
Among the few things you can count on in the college football world:
@Vol_Football
will find a way to trip over its own two feet. That’s four coaches and no
@SEC
East titles since forcing Phil Fulmer out in 2008. Last SEC title: 1998, the year Tennessee won it all. Long time ago.
ESPN provided the template and the resources. Led by my friend John Dahl, College Football 150 became, by every measure, an editorial, entertainment, and financial success. I have to tell you – it was an absolute hoot. I can say that about pretty much my entire time at ESPN. 4/
I feel so good about how so many of you keep Beano’s memory alive. He would be thrilled, and in disbelief, which, if you combine the two, would make him say, “UN-buh-LEE-va-ble!!”
Seven years ago today we lost Beano. He was the best. Still sorely missed. The TV and radio work was fantastic, of course. But I miss the pod with
@Ivan_Maisel
as well.
My father three weeks after he became a Marine and four weeks before he turned 18. Wounded in Dec. ‘44 in Leyte. Discharged in Dec. ‘45 two weeks after he turned 20. Lived another 62 years.
#grateful
#VeteransDay
I interviewed
@UCLAFootball
coach Terry Donahue many times. I served on a committee with him for several years. I found him smart, polite, engaging. I liked being around him. He fought his illness the way he competed in everything. I am sorry to hear he is gone.
Next up on My Story:
@edsbs
's Spencer Hall on the loneliness of being a
@GatorsFB
fan in Death Valley when
@LSUfootball
discovers it is playing to be No. 1. It's 2007 and
@JacobHester18
keeps converting 4th downs. As only Spencer can describe it.
A long time ago in a press box far, far away, I asked ex-coach, ex-
@ESPN
voice Mike Gottfried why he picked a team to win. His complete analysis: “They have better players.” I kept thinking about him re
@ClemsonFB
vs.
@NDFootball
. Pretty much what we saw in 1st half.
To paraphrase Beano, one night 20 years from now,
@CoachFick
will wake up at 3 a.m. and think, “Why did I let Ridder throw that 3rd-down incompletion?” Those 40 seconds came in handy for
@GeorgiaFootball
. Run. The. Clock.
The
@AuburnMBB
coach is higher-paid than the
@AuburnFootball
coach, and yet the sun still rises in the east. On the stunning change of priorities at Toomer’s Corner:
"Mental illness is an illness. It’s a deadly illness.”
@espn
college football writer
@Ivan_Maisel
is using his very personal story to raise awareness surrounding mental health.
#WorldMentalHealthDay
is October 10th. This year, let's all do our part in helping erase the stigma.
What I admire most about
@AschoffESPN
— beyond his talent and drive — is his good nature. He suffered loss at a young age, yet was always sunny and upbeat. His enthusiasm was contagious. The holiday season has turned sober, reflective. Edward has reminded me how precious life is.
Saban made reference to what I thought was most impressive part of
@AlabamaFTBL
performance. The offense executed while controlling the tempo. Scored fast early, then churned out drives when it had to after 2nd half. No turnovers, lot of first downs.
My wife awoke today and sang, “It’s the most wonderful day of the year!” Yes it is. College football is back. “It’s Hazardous Waste Day!” she continued. Our garage is cleaner. And college football is back.
Chris Dufresne has been a close friend for 25 years. We covered games together, vacationed together. I envied his talent. He knew exactly what the story was -- trust me, that's a talent -- and he had terrific comic timing on the page. A sad reminder we are guaranteed nothing.
