1/ Food and drink prices have risen by around a third since January 2021. That hit poorer households harder, because necessities take up more of their spending. But is that the end of the story? Our new paper has a detailed look.
ifs.org.uk
Using household scanner data for fast-moving consumer goods, we show that this was accompanied by historically high rates of inflation inequality.

NEW: How do the last five years measure up on levelling up in the UK? The UK is on many measures one of the most geographically unequal high-income countries. Our new report looks at progress towards the 12 levelling up ‘missions’ set out in 2022’s White Paper: [THREAD: 1/15]

New piece of work for @AnthonySeldon and @Tom_AE_123 's upcoming book on the Conservatives' time in power. Key (if obvious) takeaway from last 14 years: slow economic growth makes everything, including fiscal policy, much harder. Check out @TheIFS thread on what we've seen 📷
NEW: Ahead of the election, @PJtheEconomist, @nridpathecon and Carl Emmerson look back at the economy over the last 14 years in a chapter for @anthonyseldon and @Tom_AE_123’s forthcoming book The Conservative Effect, 2010-2024. THREAD on the UK economy since 2010: [1/13]

A key takeaway from this thread and our report: the large effects we see at GCSE are driven by one type of centre (SSLPs). These had bigger budgets, with more spending on teacher input into learning and outreach to families in need of extra support, with big impacts.
NEW: Access to Sure Start greatly improved disadvantaged children’s GCSE results, by as much as three GCSE grades. THREAD on @nridpathecon, @Sarah_Cattan and @carneiro_econ’s new report, funded by @NuffieldFound, on Sure Start’s impact on educational outcomes: [1/10]

New @TheIFS report out today on Sure Start, which I've been working on since I started here. We've found Sure Start had a big positive effect on disadvantaged children's grades throughout school, with much larger effects coming from centres with more funding. Have a read 👇

Any department would be lucky to hire Vatsal who is an extremely talented applied microeconomist working on how social networks affect development, education and, most interestingly (in his JMP), mental health. (To his credit, he's published a lovely theory paper, too!) He's a💎!

Farm households in developing countries face many different market failures. But how do they each matter for aggregate productivity? And what should policymakers do about them? My JMP provides a new way to answer these questions using data from rural Thailand. 1/🧵
Which of these market failures (broadly speaking) do you think is most responsible for the agricultural productivity gap between low- and high-income countries? 1/2

JMP🧵 Social networks help us deal with -ve economic & health shocks. But what if people worry about norms & do not ask for help? My JMP combines a RCT+ survey experiments+ structural model to show how incorrect beliefs about peers lead to silent networks https://t.co/IS5fZMHDk8
