This is incredibly disappointing and was entirely avoidable. The UN SPT have said that the obstructions they encountered left no choice but to suspend their visit, and that they represent a clear breach by 🇦🇺 of its OPCAT obligations.

Today was the first public session of 🇦🇺's review before the UN Committee against Torture. A broad range of topics were canvassed, inc. specific questions being asked about solitary confinement of juveniles, immigration detention, use of spit hoods and OPCAT compliance.

The decision by the UN SPT to terminate its visit to Australia is extremely disappointing, but not undeserved. Both federal and state governments need to fully commit to prioritising the full implementation of Australia's OPCAT promises.

We raised some specific examples with the UN Committee, including our extreme concern over the conditions at the Banksia Hill Youth Detention Centre in WA. The treatment of young people detained at Banksia Hill is inhumane and shows a complete disregard for human rights.

My biggest take-away from the #NationalOPCATSymposium last week? With only 128 days until 🇦🇺 OPCAT deadline there is still a way to go, but the expertise and commitment of the 170+ attendees was powerful. Now is the time to harness this to deliver on 🇦🇺 OPCAT commitments.
