I would have loved to have seen the Valley and western mountains at this particular moment in time. Imagine roaming these ridges and river bottoms with a long-rifle and a good dog when woods bison, elk, and Iroquois still roamed.

@Jeremyakee When grandma was on hospice and not lucid towards the end. We all went back to the farm to see her off. Her face became radiant and she began speaking with joy to her momma and daddy right before she let go.

We are under contract on a house. Closer to town than I wanted, but comes with a couple acres for 5 children, chickens, a garden, and hopefully bees. It's only a hundred yards from 600+ acres of National Forest, and a few minutes drive to thousands more and a lake. God is good!.

I drove through 6 states from almost-Canada to almost-Florida today and was awed by how beautiful America is. But I didn't see anything as beautiful as this sunset that my wife captured out the kitchen window at home. Probably because that's where the people I love the most are.

@shagbark_hick Me and the boys used to larp as longhunters in the mountains of WV. The longest was over a week covering 75 miles with only 18th-century kit. I did some hard Army stuff later, but even Ranger School movements weren't as hard as some of those treks in moccasins. Highly recommended

Baker's Store in Mount Olive, VA, est 1860. Growing up, I ate breakfast there most summer mornings with the old farmers before spending the day working on the farm with Grandad. It was also a game check station and was briefly used as a hospital during the Civil War (Toms Brook).

We have been in SEKY for over 2 months now, and if you can't tell by my posts, we have absolutely fallen in love with the area. We have had some setbacks but will finally be closing on our farmhouse and small acreage in a week. I can't wait to plant roots and raise my kids here.

Grandaddy put the farms in historic and conservation easements before he passed. I dont think he gave a damn if we kept them or sold them, just as long as they were never developed. Those farms will be farms long after I'm dead and gone, and that puts my soul at ease.

When I did 18th Century historical trekking, we'd often stop at the Mountaineer restaurant in Wardensville, WV. They were cool about kids in week old smelly longhunter kit dining, but asked us to leave our longrifles/bows in the coat room. It was a proper establishment. Great pie
Unpopular opinion, but I should be able to check my rifle at a nice restaurant no differently than a coat check.

The hills outside Oneonta, AL were home for 4 years. 40 miles to B-ham: A reasonable commute without all the B-ham problems. Safe, clean, friendly town where everyone knows each other. Lots of civic events, neat downtown, and surrounded by beautiful countryside. Go Redskins!

With the exception of deployments, I have always lived in the southeast, either in or immediately adjacent to the Appalachians. But I truly wasn't prepared for the beauty of the Rocky Mountains. I've traveled the world, but nothing compares to the natural beauty of America.

I know I post a ton of pictures of EKY. I have absolutely fallen in love with this place. But I fall in love with every place I live. Even when stationed near DC, I found tons of natural beauty in the outdoors nearby. Wherever you live, get outside and appreciate God's handiwork!

We spent many years in the mountains west of Strasburg. Small interstate town at the base of Massanutten Mountain and the Shenandoah River and surrounded by farms and Civil War battlefields. Antique capital of VA and close to Shenandoah National Park and George Washington NF.

Growing up, Nov was spent solitary hunting for big bucks. But late muzzleloader season in Dec/Jan was about filling the freezer with does. It was often a group effort with lots of deer drives. Some of my best memories came from these late-season family hunts.

City living ain't my style, but my wife and I lived in Staunton, near downtown, for 4 years after we got married. To this day, it is my favorite city. Historical, close to the mountains, walkable, and has a very old world feel. We may retire in the mountains west of there.

I grew up near Woodstock VA. Just a few miles from Strasburg, it is also surrounded by farms, mountains, and battlefields. Everything about it is historical. It always seemed like the quintessential Shenandoah Valley small town. Easy commute to either Winchester or Harrisonburg.

My family has been in VA since the early 1700s, and I've always lived in the south. I love the people, culture, and natural beauty, and couldn't imagine living elsewhere. But I hate the heat, sun, and dread summer. I crave cold, snow, wind, and dreariness. Is it genetic memory?

He's doing them a favor. I was stationed in the DC area for over a year, and lived an hour from Huntsville for years. AL is infinitely better. H-ville has all the amenities of NOVA with a much lower cost of living. I'd be looking to live out past Gurley, Grant, or south of Arab.
