I cried twice this week. Once when young woman told me “Mom was my sanctuary.” Her mom was among 8 killed in Atlanta. I cried again when I saw video of Filipino mom kicked in face in NYC. Amidst tragedy, let’s pay tribute to AAPI moms who give us strength (THREAD) #StopAsianHate

In the wake of the Atlanta shootings and the denials of racism, been thinking about Steven Yeun's words: "Sometimes I wonder if the Asian American experience is what it’s like when you’re thinking about everyone else, but nobody else is thinking about you." https://t.co/eTjqDxy0mg

“You matter to me, we matter to me, and I would so much rather have us and our allies on our side than any of them. For we already belong.”
I wrote a letter to Asian women living in America. To, not for—obviously there's no way to write for all of us—but I've felt pulled toward spaces with Asian women this week, & at least for now we were the only people I could bring myself to write to https://t.co/0aOQwx5j3a

It's so triggering for Asian-American women to witness this coverage because we've all experienced being reduced to a sexual object purely because of our race. Been thinking about this story I produced years ago about this very phenomenon:

From A Whisper To A Rallying Cry by @PaulaYoo (out 4/20/21) may end up being the most affecting and important book I read this year. It's definitely the most affecting and important book I've read SO FAR this year. It's about the 1982 murder of Chinese American Vincent Chin.

Asian reporters fluent in Korean who know Atlanta are being told they might be too biased to cover the shootings & I mean who are they, who are these newsroom people telling Asian reporters they'll be too biased to cover an anti-Asian massacre, I just want to talk
Since the shootings, @AAJA members reported: -being fluent in Korean, knowing ATL, asking to cover but being told they may be too biased -being the only AAPI at work and feeling overwhelmed they have to represent all AAPIs -& more. To their newsrooms:

This. This x 100.
Are you sad and angry about the surge in anti-Asian violence? Wondering if there’s something anti-racist you can do? One idea: learn how pronounce Asian names! It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just try, and it will make a difference to your Asian friends and people you meet. (1/8)

While AAPI are often labeled “hardworking” or “rule-abiding,” that’s paired with a denial of a fully rounded soul. This affects us in big ways (violence, apathy) and subtler ways (being told “no one’s attracted to Asian guys” or “I didn’t expect you to be funny/creative/etc”)

Tenzin Kalsang used to get nervous reading stories in person at the Brooklyn Public Library. These days, she's gone virtual, attracting viewers from as far away as Australia and Switzerland for her bilingual story time sessions. https://t.co/TkI21KRjdH

Hundreds of COVID-19 vaccinations went at #MXlibrary during yesterday’s @CityofSanDiego’s pop-up clinic. A big thanks to the @SDFD vaccination team 👏 getting so many doses out of the vials and into arms! 💪
