My last day at TIME is Feb. 12.
But I still have things to say! So I wrote about Griselda:
“A flimsy shroud of feminism barely disguises the pulp fiction at the show’s core, which exploits the image of the exotic Colombian ‘other’ to stir up intrigue.”
Reasons why that Fleetwood Mac-loving, skateboarding TikTok guy is the perfect break from The News:
🥔 He works in a potato warehouse
🔥 He's also a firefighter
🍓 He goes through a jug of juice a day
“From tokenism in 1985, to elevating representation in 2020, to representing a data point in the ether and beyond, how are we connecting to human people? And who’s listening?" I loved Sunita Mani's brilliant words:
The bad news: There's no new Abbott Elementary episode tonight 🥲
The good news: I talked to teachers around the country about Abbott's unflinching approach to charter schools
Logged onto Twitter to say this and saw that all of my old friends at the LA Times were going through this too -- just got laid off from Time, along with a dozen other union members. My heart breaks for this industry and all of the good people in it ♥️
BEEF captures an emotion that’s so hard to articulate: a ubiquitous sadness—inherent in so many of us—that burns into anger.
I talked to Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, and showrunner Lee (Sonny) Sung Jing about how they made that happen.
Maybe sharing this here will make it feel real?? I'm joining the New York Times' Culture desk this summer as a fellow! So grateful, super stoked, and lowkey stressed about NYC housing :')
Her name sign in ASL means "spray painter at heart."
For my last trick as an
@latimesent
intern, here's the story of how
@Natasha_Ofili
brought a Deaf, Black character into the Spider-Verse:
If you like:
@BeeBabs
' Honey & Spice, Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing, Ethan Hawke/Julie Delpy's Before Sunrise trilogy, fried chicken, South London, or feel-good love stories, this one's for you!
It feels weird to celebrate at a time like this, but I’ve been sitting on some news: I’m so excited & grateful to join the
@latimes
as the summer Arts & Entertainment intern, and to work with the
@pulitzercenter
as a reporting fellow on liberatory memory in Chicago & Colombia! 💛
"We, like Calum, yo-yo through life, oscillating between the inability to get out of bed and forcing ourselves up, determined to start fresh."
Wrote about Aftersun, my mom, depression, and me 💌
I was flabbergasted by how organically Sex Education included nonbinary characters, chest binding scenes and disabled intimacy — without pandering or tokenization — and I got to write about it:
With one month left in D.C., I'm starting this thread to hold myself accountable: I'm trying to stop by the White House every day at lunch (as work allows!) to see who's protesting there, why, and how they feel about the freedom of speech.
For
@latimes
, I talked to Black Hollywood artists about how they support Black Lives Matter.
L.A. birthed the BLM movement, and is home to an industry that shapes public perception of Black America. These worlds could only collide here.
When I was little, I used to steal my dad’s copies of
@TIME
to read (before he was done – he wasn’t a fan of my magazine habit). Proud of my first byline for them!
"I’m not satisfied with Black trans lives mattering; I want Black trans lives to be easy, to be pleasurable, and to be filled with lush opportunities." ✨🧚
“I want you to know that it’s not frivolous to have dreams about seemingly small or pleasurable things; it is vital.
The world that I dream of is filled with ease.”
@tourmaliiine
I talked to costume designer Daniella Pearman about Aimee's beautiful, jean-burning healing journey, Eric's matching choker and harness set at the queer club night, and Maeve's iconic fringe leather jacket 🪞
Adam Lobel—the author of Frog and Toad—loved animation—he dragged his daughter to see Bambi when she was 2 (too young) and his son to see Pinocchio when he was 14 (too old).
His son thinks he would have been happy to see his creatures in moving form.
Multiple Senate Democrats are referring to and quoting Justice John Paul Stevens’ dissent, which warned the ruling would undermine elected offices in the U.S.
The
@nytimes
is pressuring us to return to the office in June. But RTO must be agreed on with
@NYTimesGuild
as part of our contract. I hope management comes to the table today ready to fairly negotiate on all the issues that matter to us, including wages, benefits and RTO
“Foreign actors must not be allowed free reign to influence our elections,” adds
@SenatorShaheen
, referencing Russian interference in the 2016 presidential elections & Special Counsel Robert Mueller's testimony
I’m here at
@KoreanCultureNY
, where Korean Cultural Center executive director Yun Jeung Jo and “KPOP” musical composer Helen Park have just announced that
@official__luna
will star in “KPOP,” coming to Broadway in October
I wrote about how Andy Warhol never left the zeitgeist, and how his Carpatho Rusyn immigrant roots, Catholic faith, and queerness dovetailed in his work:
I did it! I got "softboi" into the
@latimes
!
"The Duke, who has the reputation of a 'rake' and the personality of a softboi, quietly wears his late mother’s diamond- and emerald-encrusted enamel brooch throughout the series."
In reporting this I learned that Taraji P. Henson (who plays Miss Hannigan) calls the kids who play the orphans her “biscuits and ladybugs and little crumbs” 😌
Five years ago, my dad took me on a homecoming trip to Colombia. Now it’s my mom’s turn. We went to County Clare, Ireland and found the land her grandparents farmed.
No wonder magical realism & folklore are so strong in these places — how could they not be?
My dad has always had facial hair. He’s also the only intensivist at his hospital in WI. Each year, they test to make sure their N95 masks fit/work & each year he fails bc of his facial hair. Last week, he said next time I see him he might “look like a boiled egg” (have to shave)
The world knew the twins as anomalies: the only Black students in predominantly white schools—and uniquely silent. But June and Jennifer Gibbons also stood out for what they created beyond themselves: they were naturally gifted artists.
I wrote about two South Asian filmmakers, Sujata Day and Agam Darshi, who happened to make two uncannily similar films at the same time.
Come for the joints smoked in the minivan, stay for the torrid affair with the family lawyer:
Juneteenth entails a lot more than mere recognition (see: substantive change), but in the meantime, here are a few ways to celebrate (my first for
@nytimesarts
!):
For the past week, I've been settling into Buenos Aires, and today is my first day
@LNdata
working with
@fcoel
, inventor of the mate emoji! 🧉 I couldn't be more excited to be here💕
Early in his career, Chilean director Pablo Larraín made an unintentional trilogy about Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship — from the coup to the plebiscite
Now, he’s back with a black comedy horror film, starring Pinochet as a 250-year-old vampire
CW: Su*cide
After the fourth suicide at Northwestern in one year, I began to wonder: what happens in the aftermath? How do the friends & loved ones of the deceased grieve and heal in such a high-pressure environment? I wrote about it here:
When Alexis Kim and Ally Friedman opened the “A loss in our community” email and saw their friend’s name, it marked the beginning of a long process of grieving, change and growth:
Wrote a couple of stories about Flamin’ Hot, the self-proclaimed origin story of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
Co-writer Linda Yvette Chávez revised a draft of a script, massaging in the Chicano culture of Southern California in the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s:
For
@yesmagazine
, supported by
@pulitzercenter
:
Both Colombia and Chicago met with fresh, state-inflicted trauma this year. Memory workers in both places are helping communities learn to heal.
This didn't make it in, but I love it:
Flight of the Conchords musician Bret McKenzie — who freelanced on the film — said the character (Massimo Marcovaldo) has "mana," a Māori word that means power, dignity & respect
The hardest part of freelancing so far has been not being able to cover PROBLEMISTA, my favorite film of the year.
Salvadoran comedian Julio Torres uses his trademark surrealism to peel back the complexities surrounding immigration in America.
(I’d still love to write this!)
As
@fcoel
once wrote, “I [thought]: ‘Maybe I’m not capable of tackling this challenge and they’ll find out sooner or later.’”
Instead, they helped me learn, grow, and rise to the challenge—all while putting up with my Spanish skills ❤️ Gracias por todo,
@LNdata
!!
If anyone’s interested in learning more about Chicago’s history of police violence/torture & the $5.5 million of reparations the city paid: I just spent a whole quarter writing about it – DM me for resources!
Our next 2020 Reporting Fellow is from
@MedillSchool
: Laura Zornosa (
@laurnosa
)! Laura will examine the concept of liberatory memory in the cities of Bogotá, Colombia, and Chicago, cities that have memorials for human rights violations. Welcome, Laura!
If a loved one (or anyone else) gaslit you or made you doubt yourself re: the fact that there is a GLOBAL PANDEMIC occurring today, this is me reassuring you that it is, in fact, a good & compassionate thing to wear a mask & social distance!!
My last story as a
@nytimesarts
fellow published today!
I’m so proud of this piece — and these kids.
Brooklyn Transition Center, a special education high school, created, performed and filmed “In the Stuy,” a Bed-Stuy adaptation of “In the Heights.”
