NEW: my first article for
@NOTUSreports
!
I went to PA and talked with Ukrainian conservatives. As more Republicans — including their own member of Congress — dial back on Ukraine funding, they feel torn between allegiance to heritage and to their party.
SCOOP: Joshua Hall, who was convicted of threatening to kill Rep. Eric Swalwell, has filed with the FEC to run for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 11th district.
“I deserve a second chance as anybody does, and I still want to be able to make a positive impact,” he told me.
Hall served 20 months in prison for the threat and for impersonating family members of then-Pres. Trump, including his minor son Barron, raising over $7,000 in funds used to pay for alcohol and living expenses, according to court documents. He is on probation through 2026.
UCSB is the second campus, after UCSC, to go on a full strike for a cost-of-living adjustment. UCSC graduate students began their third week of striking today.
UCSB graduate students have been organizing for a COLA since January, but most of the movement’s initial actions were in solidarity with the striking UCSC graduate students.
Good morning! I’m at the Supreme Court, where a couple hundred have already gathered to demonstrate in favor of student debt cancellation (and some slept here overnight).
Oral arguments over the Biden Administration’s debt cancellation begin at 10 a.m.

News: NPR to lay off about 10 percent of its workforce.
CEO John Lansing says ad revenue for podcasting shriveled even as general economy seems on mend.
He promises NPR will build on its mission and values but adds, ""This will be a major loss."
My story:

Republican Rep. Dan Meuser was the only Republican to vote present on aid to Ukraine today.
He represents the county with the highest concentration of Ukrainian Americans in the U.S. I went to his district back in November:

Some of my favorite stories I got to tackle this summer! (a thread🧵)
UAW 2865 announced today that 41 wildcat strikers who lost their jobs over a cost-of-living adjustment have been reinstated by UC Santa Cruz. Story to come.
Thrilled to announce I’ll be continuing my work with
@CalMatters
this fall as a fellow in the College Journalism Network! I’m working with a team focused on in-depth higher ed investigations and I can’t wait to get started.
.
@SecretaryPete
is now unveiling a new DOT rule requiring two-person train crews.
That provision is in the Railway Safety Act, introduced after the train derailment at East Palestine. That act hasn’t come to the floor in the House or Senate, despite bipartisan support.
One bit from my story on the PA-12 primary:
John Fetterman and Summer Lee are about as far apart as can be on Israel and Gaza. But that hasn't stopped Fetterman from strongly endorsing her re-election bid, even with a pro-Israel primary opponent:
California student journalists: I want to hear from you about the relationship between your publication and campus administration for an article for
@calmatters

Today’s my last day with
@usatodayDC
. I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my journalism career.
I’ll still be in DC – news to come on that soon!
For now, a thread of my favorite stories from the summer 🧵
Biggest applause so far from the students at Franklin Pierce University comes from Nikki Haley’s lines about term limits and mental competency tests for 75+.
Even among young Democrats I talked with, they weren’t planning to vote for Biden, and all cited age as the reason.
I’m at the Supreme Court, where hundreds are gathered to protest the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Crowds are only expected to get larger as the day goes on.
First finished book of 2023 ✔️
Hoping to spend less time on the bird app and more time reading this year.
(Maybe I shouldn’t be posting about it then, but hey, baby steps)
Some personal news!
Tomorrow is my first day in the inaugural class of fellows at
@AJI_Fellowships
.
Couldn’t be more thrilled to start learning from some of the best journalists in Washington and take my reporting skills to the next level.
My first article (!) for CalMatters College Journalism Network:
@omarsrashad
and I reported on how colleges, faculty, and international students are responding to new ICE policy that bans intl students from studying at online-only schools in the fall.
The CSU and UC are some of the most diverse college systems in the country, yet most students are policed by overwhelmingly white officers. My latest for
@CalMatters
and
@opencampusmedia

My first A1!!!
.
@_erinmansfield
and I spoke with anti-abortion advocates about what their work will look like post-Roe v. Wade. They all agreed they’re just getting started.
McKayla Wilkes (
@MeetMckayla
), a congressional candidate running against Steny Hoyer in Maryland’s fifth district, got emotional when speaking to the crowd.
“Don’t stop fighting, because this is just the beginning. This is just the precipice of what is to come.”
So excited to announce that I'll be interning with
@SBIndyNews
until the end of April, and my first article is now up. Send me news tips and story ideas for anything in Santa Barbara County.
To a crowd of less than ten R representatives, Kevin McCarthy delivers his final speech on the House floor.
“I know the potential of this nation, I’m so grateful to be given the opportunity to serve. Though I may be leaving, I won’t stop serving,” he said.
Some personal news:
As of today I am now the University News Editor at the Daily Nexus!
So excited to see what I can accomplish in this new position, and send me your suggestions for UCSB and UC-wide coverage.
Good morning! For
@sacbee_news

I’ve admired
@opcofamerica
for years and it’s such an honor to be recognized.
This is my tenth (and final) co-byline with
@MaxAbrams5
, who remains my favorite person to write with. Fitting to write this last one together as we both leave the news team.
If you're only going to read one thing today, it should be this deep dive into the California Senate race:
"A dynamic trio, solid liberals who will almost always vote the same way but nonetheless represent a distinct segment of their party"
Striking UCSC teaching students, who have withheld grades since Fall Quarter 2019 in the fight for a cost-of-living adjustment, have decided to collectively submit grades.
Kind of surreal seeing my name on the front page of the paper I’ve been reading since I was a kid. Reporting for
@modbee
on Modesto-area high school graduates’ plans for college in the fall.
My first big article with National Journal is finally out! Took a closer look a renewable energy programs in rural areas — and why some may be facing funding cuts this coming fiscal year.
On today’s front page, voters are concerned about the direction of the country. Their top concerns: the economy and inflation.

This week’s print edition includes our first UC News column, looking at a variety of news stories across the UC system from other student publications.
The House plans to bring Ukraine aid to the floor next week, according to multiple members.
Still disagreement on topline numbers, REPO, land lease, and whether or not it includes border provisions and/or LNG exports.
Growing up an hour south of Sacramento, the Bee was my first exposure to journalism. This internship is such a dream, and I couldn’t be joining at a better time!
I’m reporting on Del Playa tonight with other
@dailynexus
