@JamesAFurey I also found that consequences + compassionate conversation helped the kids feel safe enough to tell me what was really going on, and then we could go from there. As an adoptive mom, I see the results of real trauma daily. Many kids can't cope w/o support. Discipline plus safety.

The compassionate response to a student who is acting up in class because they have it rough at home is to discipline them in the same way you would any other student. This idea that behavior is communication has been used to excuse all manner of terrible behavior. AND it

@JamesAFurey Behavior IS communication. What has too often been left out of that discussion, however, is the fact that consequences are communication, too. Consequences say “What you are doing is wrong. It would be a bad idea for you to repeat the action in the future. Let’s course correct.”
