100%. It's worse than Tennyson, which most folks don't drive on to just pass through, unlike both Lowell and 32nd.

30 years ago it wasn't clear inner trackers would work at the LHC and muons were one of the few sure bets. @CMSExperiment’s “M” also reflects that and from day one it yielded beautiful collision results. See the η peak peeking out? 1/ @CmsMuon

"climate goals" 🤣
The Kew Gardens Interchange project is complete! The overhaul of this corridor is great news for nearly 600,000 daily motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, & our ambitious climate goals. When it comes to modernizing our infrastructure, we’re keeping our foot on the accelerator. 🚘

Our office kitchen contract won't be renewed after Friday. They spoiled us beyond belief. I am sad that tech workers get multi-month severance and those who serve us get nada. If anyone wants to join in a show of appreciation DM me. Hoping to do something by Friday.

But if we can’t even begin to reason about a highly-simplified and approximate confusion matrix for these models, then how can we ever reliably use them for decision-making? How can we even begin to approximate the ways chatgpt gets things wrong, and the costs therein? 2/2

Large language models aren’t technically classifiers, but we frequently treat them as such. We expect them to be useful by delivering some sort of “right answer”. 1/2

Ohhh y'all can overcome a filibuster to screw over rail workers??? Got it.
Expectation in the Senate is there will be enough votes to overcome a filibuster and pass legislation to avert a potential railway strike, per several Senate sources. Timing is unclear but House expected to act first later this week. Any one senator can slow down a vote.

After dumping Helsinki’s car-centric 1968 plan, Finns embarked on a decades-long campaign to slow motor vehicles. “In the 1970s it was normally 50km/h in cities; then in 2000 it went down to 40km/h. Now more than half our urban streets have a 30km/h limit.” https://t.co/8QWmkcoIGA

The Nordic nation’s rate of vehicle fatalities is a fraction of the toll in the US, despite a harsh climate and ice-covered streets. Here’s how the Finns do traffic safety.

Full sellout from the White House for the majority of rail workers who rejected the deal the President brokered, preemptively denying them the right to strike. This was the “which side are you on?” moment, and the White House chose the railroad bosses. https://t.co/yasjb9tFdf

What a timely post. While my experience in DS wasn't as distinctly negative as the OP's, the thought process that's driven me toward data engineering has been remarkably similar. In particular, the lack of measurement and attribution around the impact of DS is...dreary.
I hate writing posts that are more personal and don't have a real point because there is some sort of latent assumption that people should give a shit. I'll state up front that you should not give a shit, but I was still compelled to write it and post it.

Translation: We stole what may have been someone’s life savings—potentially ruining his life—for no tangible public safety benefit. And then we acted like that was heroic. It’s legalized larceny, & it’s routine.
CBP officers discovered $33K in unreported currency possessed by an Egypt-bound traveler at Washington Dulles International Airport during a baggage examination on November 8. The traveler verbally reported that he had $20K. More: https://t.co/CIt6cIiBgr

Don’t forget that social media is hard. Give yourself some grace if you feel off. I’m trying to celebrate former coworkers, mourn a mass shooting, brag about cooking shenanigans, amplify certain voices, and find a new job. And I surely don’t know how to manage all that…
