Factual statement: . Parachains and rollups (with all their subcategories) are the same in *what* they do, and different in *how* they do it. What they do: Scale out an L1 to have more overall blockspace/bandwidth. How they do it: Differs as per all the comments in the below.

JAM upgrade is a realization that even @Polkadot's uncompromising solution to sharding is not enough – we also need flexible boundaries among shards, allowing them to synchronously compose, should they wish to communicate often.
