China went from catching up, to the dominant academic institutions publishing in NeurIPS (top AI conference). Tsinghua topped all universities, and Peking only trails MIT+CMU. Now is not the time to slash federal research funding, but rather to increase it. This is a Code Red.

This is worth a read re: the planned funding cuts to basic research in computer science in the US.
I am alarmed by the proposed cuts to U.S. funding for basic research, and the impact this would have for U.S. competitiveness in AI and other areas. Funding research that is openly shared benefits the whole world, but the nation it benefits most is the one where the research is

1/3 The US didnβt end up leading the world in computing by luck. It happened because it made long-term, public investments in basic research, especially through NSF. Thatβs what created the technology that todayβs companies are built on.
